Looking back on meaningful conversations from last term.

At a student-organized panel hosted by the University of Waterloo UNICEF chapter, United College Human Rights professors Dr. Nancy Tapias-Torrado and Dr. Julie Kare Seirlis joined Saad Hammadi of the Balsillie School to discuss children’s rights in practice from challenging white saviour frameworks to recognizing how local communities lead rights-based work under the most difficult conditions.

The discussion underscored an important reminder: the everyday scale of Human Rights work is often the most overlooked, yet the most essential.

To join more conversations like this, visit the Human Rights page on our website for upcoming events and courses offered through the minor programme.

Adam Livsh*ts, a Master’s student in Economic Development & Innovation at the University of Waterloo, is developing six case studies for United College’s new INNOV 300: Case Studies in Social Innovation & Impact course which was launched in Fall 2025.

Each case features Waterloo Region entrepreneurs who are putting the UN Sustainable Development Goals into action.

These “choose-your-own-adventure” style case studies let students step into real decision points and see what it’s like to be a social innovator. They’ll deepen appreciation for complexity, ethics, and impact in businesses built for purpose.

Check out the full story to learn what Adam discovered about linking global goals with local challenges, and how the SDGs can guide social change in practice. https://bit.ly/3IBVSFO

Remember when we didn’t have a cozy firepit, multi-purpose court, covered outdoor study spaces, or the perfect setting for a sunny community dinner?

Throwback to October 2023 on the United Green – before this vibrant community space became what it is today.

Thanks to the generosity of United College donors, staff, faculty, alumni, students, and friends, we now have a space designed for connection, reflection, and play.

So grab a book, a ball, or some good company and make the most of it!
