Feeding 9 Billion Challenge - WLU

Feeding 9 Billion Challenge - WLU The Feeding 9 Billion Challenge is an interactive event where students, faculty, and community members come together to develop new ways to feed our world.

In the year 2016, there are approximately 7 billion people living on our planet, and too many of these people are not being adequately fed on a daily basis. Jump into the future just 30 years - in the year 2050, there are going to be approximately 9 billion people on our planet that will need to be fed adequately. How will we achieve this considering the flaws in our current food systems? This is

the question that will be posed to participants of the Feeding 9 Billion Challenge, which is set to take place from October 21st at 4:00pm until October 22nd at 4:00pm in the Hawks Nest on Laurier's Waterloo campus. Student participants from all faculties will be split into teams and tasked with creating innovative solutions to the issue of food security at a local, regional, and/or global level. Students will be supported throughout the Challenge by faculty members, staff associates, and community experts on food security issues and sustainable food practices. At the event's culmination, teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges, and the most innovative and sustainable solutions will be awarded prize money. After the event, there will be opportunities for students to take the ideas they come up with and develop them further, thus giving students and their ideas a chance to change our own communities for the better. Do not wait to sign up - registration will be capped at 60 participants. Get inspired. Change the world.

** Dinner, breakfast, and lunch will be provided to all participants.

** All participants have the option to stay overnight at the event, but it is not required. The Laurier Sustainability Office has partnered with Social Innovation & Venture Creation (SIVC) Laurier to bring you the Feeding 9 Billion Challenge. Other groups that have been involved in the planning process include:

- Enactus Laurier
- 1st Year Sustainability Council
- WLU EcoHawks
- WLU Food Bank
