📅 | A traveling outdoor installation, March 10, 9am - 5pm

All are welcome to join us tomorrow as Métis artist Tracey-Mae Chambers installs her work on the greenspace in front of East Campus Hall.

"The goal of is to broach the subject of decolonization. Many (but not all) of these public spaces serve to present a colonial viewpoint and primarily speak about the settlers who arrived and lived here, but not the Indigenous people that were displaced along the way. The decolonization of such places is a ponderous task and must be shouldered collectively. The discussion of reconciliation and decolonization is hard to start and harder still to maintain. Therefore, I am hoping to use my work to help bridge the gap between settlers and Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit people by creating art that is approachable and non-confrontational so we can start"

The submission deadline for the SUNDANCe Award has been extended until March 4, 2022!

The SUNDANCe Indigenous Award will be granted to full-time Indigenous students who are attending Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, the University of Waterloo, Conrad Grebel College, Renison College, St. Jeromes College, St. Pauls College or the University of Guelph. The SUNDANCe Indigenous Award was established to recognize Indigenous students who give back to their communities.

The Office of Indigenous Relations is thrilled to welcome Kevin George to the team as the Indigenous Special Projects Coordinator! Kevin is Potawatomi and Cree and a member of the Chippewas of Kettle and Stoney Point First Nation with close connection to his second community of Fort McMurray 468 First Nation.

As the Indigenous Special Projects Coordinator, Kevin will support and advance the work of the Office of Indigenous Relations with a focus on communications, website and social media management, event coordination, and overseeing the development and implementation of special projects and initiatives.

We have found great local resources and events to support a joyous Kwanzaa 2021 with friends and family:

The Family & Children Services (FACS) of the Waterloo Region have put together the “Kwanzaa, a Celebration of Family, Community, and Culture” webpage that features fact/information sheets on the traditions and principles of Kwanzaa. Learn more here: https://loom.ly/1Nz1LyA

In honour of Kwanzaa, on December 26th at 7pm, for the 15th year, the Apollo Theater will bring families and communities together for a global celebration of culture, tradition, ritual, and community with Abdel R. Created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 to celebrate family, faith, culture and heritage. The celebration is modeled after first harvest celebrations in Africa.

On Dec 6th 1989, a man entered a mechanical engineering class at École Polytechnique and killed fourteen women (twelve engineering students, one nursing student, and one employee of the university) in the name of "fighting feminism."

We remember each of the 14 women who were murdered:
