LUTSA Remembers Black July

As this month comes to an end, we pause to remember the victims and survivors of Black July 1983, a tragic chapter in Eelam Tamil history that forever changed the lives of countless families. We honor those who lost their lives, those who were forced to flee their homes, and the generations who continue to carry the memories and lasting impact of these events.

Remembering Black July is not only about reflecting on the past, it is about acknowledging the pain endured by a community, preserving the truth of history, and reaffirming the importance of justice, human dignity, and reconciliation. By sharing these stories and remembering those affected, we help ensure that such tragedies are never forgotten.

As a Tamil Students’ Association, we stand in solidarity with the Tamil community and all those whose lives were forever shaped by Black July. We remember, we reflect, and we remain committed to fostering awareness, compassion, and hope for a future built on peace and understanding.

🪔 DAY 3 OF TAMIL GENOCIDE EDUCATION WEEK: BILL 104 🪔

The Tamil Genocide Education Week Act, also known as Bill 104, was passed in Ontario in 2021 and officially recognizes May 12–18 as Tamil Genocide Education Week.

Introduced by Ontario MPP Vijay Thanigasalam, the legislation marked an important step toward education, remembrance, and recognition for Tamil communities across Ontario. For many survivors and diaspora families, Bill 104 represented acknowledgment after decades of silence surrounding the genocide of Eelam Tamils.

The legislation continues to create space for conversations surrounding Tamil history, justice, and preserving the stories of those affected for future generations.

🪔 DAY 2 OF TAMIL GENOCIDE EDUCATION WEEK: Historical Background of Tamil Oppression🪔

Presented by LUTSA.

The Tamil genocide did not happen overnight. It was built through decades of discrimination, political exclusion, anti-Tamil violence, and the erasure of Tamil identity and culture. From the Sinhala Only Act to the burning of the Jaffna Public Library, these events deeply impacted generations of Tamil people and laid the foundation for further violence and suffering.

Understanding this history is essential in recognizing why remembrance, education, and accountability matter today.

🪔 TAMIL GENOCIDE EDUCATION WEEK 🪔

Today marks the beginning of Tamil Genocide Education Week.

From May 12–18, we remember the lives lost, honour the resilience of Eelam Tamils, and continue raising awareness about the truth of the Tamil Genocide and the Mullivaikkal Massacre.

This week is a reminder that remembrance must be accompanied by education, advocacy, and action. We stand together to preserve our history, amplify Tamil voices, and push for justice and recognition.
