🚀 If you’re looking for a fun weekend activity, be sure to stop by Conestoga Mall for a STEM exhibition featuring exciting hands-on challenges and educational fun!

💡 The City of Waterloo Museum is hosting STEM Starts Here: Celebrating Waterloo Innovators – a free, interactive family event, highlighting local innovation and leadership, with opportunities to explore potential career paths. The CEMC will be hosting creative mathematical problem-solving activities for youth at this event.

✨ In honour of Women’s History Month, we’d like to highlight Wang Zhenyi’s contributions to mathematics and astronomy. Thank you to student(s) from Hillfield Strathallan College for their submission to the Mathematician Mosaic, featuring this remarkable 18th century astronomer, poet, and mathematician.

🧩 The Mathematician Mosaic is an initiative designed to celebrate the rich and diverse contributions of mathematicians from all walks of life, through the creation of biographical posters. This project is open to students from all grades!

📣 Looking to dive into the world of computer science? The CEMC is now accepting applications for the 2027 SPARCS Workshop!

💻 SPARCS is an immersive, week-long workshop for girls and gender minorities currently enrolled in Grades 9 or 10 at a Canadian school. Designed specifically for beginners, this workshop introduces participants to a diverse selection of computer science topics through engaging lectures, labs and hands-on activities. No prior experience is needed!

🗓 Applications will be accepted up until Wednesday, February 10, 2027.
📍 Workshop dates: Sunday, May 2 to Saturday, May 8, 2027.

📝 The CEMC will contact applicants about their selection status in late February. If accepted, applicants will then be required to fill out a registration form with more information about logistics and pay the workshop registration fee.

📣 Get ready because the Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) is coming soon!

💡 The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) is an online, multiple-choice contest with fun and engaging questions that introduces students to computer science concepts. Students will learn problem-solving techniques, while showcasing their computational and logical thinking. The contest is held at three levels - Grade 5/6, Grade 7/8 and Grade 9/10.

🗓️ Contest Dates:
North & South America: Monday, November 9, 2026 to Friday, November 20, 2026

The CEMC was happy to support Team Canada at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Led by Troy Vasiga and Paul McGrath, Associate Professors at Waterloo, the team earned four medals: Haoyang Jin and Alex Zhiyuan Lin both earned silver and Nathan Katov and Jerry Zhou earned bronze. Congratulations to the team!

📣 The CEMC’s CS Escape Workshop is returning! This virtual workshop introduces programming to Grade 8 students who identify as a girl, as well as other gender minorities who feel comfortable in a space that centres the experiences of women.

✨ Over four sessions, participants will learn programming fundamentals, coding logic, 3D animation, and problem-solving using Delightex, culminating in the creation of a shareable virtual escape room!
