About a month ago, areas in the Niagara Region were hit with significant rainstorms that overwhelmed roads, sewers, and drainage systems. Thousands of basements flooded. As Mennonite Disaster Service began to mobilize in the area, Grebelites saw a way to help close to home. Several groups of students drove to Niagara and volunteered where they could, working to remove damaged walls, floors, furniture, and possessions in the clean-up process. The experience built on Grebel’s existing relationship with MDS: each year, students organize a week-long service trip to a disaster-affected area, and MDS offers scholarships to students who serve longer terms.
