Agriculture plays a far greater role in Canada’s economy, and everyday life, than many of us realize.

A recent University of Waterloo impact story highlights how innovation is transforming modern farming—from advanced seed development and crop protection to digital tools that help farmers make more informed decisions.

Leta LaRush (BA ’11), Vice-President and Head of BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada, are helping drive this progress—supporting farmers in producing safe, affordable food while strengthening the resilience of Canada’s food system.

“We're one of the largest crop inputs providers in Canada, and that innovation plays an important role in helping farmers produce safe, affordable food," says LaRush.

As professional baseball sees another high-profile elbow injury with Toronto Blue Jays right-hander José Berríos having undergone ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) surgery, new research from the University of Waterloo suggests many pitchers may be able to reduce stress on their elbows without sacrificing velocity.

Computer modelling at Waterloo shows that professional baseball pitchers could make mechanical changes to avoid a common, career-threatening elbow injury without necessarily sacrificing competitive velocity.

"Our simulation found solutions that suggest there's untapped efficiency out there,” said Cedric Attias, who led the study as a graduate student in mechanical engineering at Waterloo. “Our goal isn't to tell pitchers to throw softer. It's to help them throw smarter."

As Canada heads into another wildfire season, communities across the country are confronting a new reality: fires are starting earlier, spreading farther and affecting regions historically considered low risk. After several record-breaking years, including 2023, experts say wildfire is no longer a regional concern but a national one.

Anabela Bonada, Managing Director of Climate Science at the University of Waterloo’s Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation, explains what this shift means and how Canadians can prepare.

Sport continues to be one of the most effective proving grounds for technology that can scale into health care, defence and human performance. At the University of Waterloo, student projects and research-driven ideas are serving as a foundation for sport tech startups.

With the support of the University’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, including its flagship incubator Velocity, the following companies are each demonstrating how performance innovation at Waterloo travels far beyond the game.

During Toronto Tech Week (May 25 to 29, 2026), Velocity is hosting a sport tech and human performance event at Left Field Brewery, bringing together Waterloo founders, investors and industry leaders to explore how performance-driven technologies extend beyond the game.

⚾ Trajekt Sports - AI powered baseball pitching simulation
🏊 TritonWear - Wearable performance analytics for competitive swimming
🧠 HeadFirst - Rapid, objective concussion detection
⚾ PitcherNet - AI-based biomechanics analysis for baseball pitching
🤖 Strivonix - Wearable compression therapy and recovery technology

As a Master of Biology student, Jordan Francis (MSc ’26) used a mouse colon made from stem cells to research a key gut protein called ESRP1.

When diseases like inflammatory bowel disease occur, the expression of the ESRP1 protein becomes dysregulated. Despite its importance, scientists still don’t fully understand what ESRP1 does in the intestine, and that's where Jordan's important research comes into play.

An interdisciplinary student research team at the University of Waterloo has achieved a breakthrough in materials science with the creation of a tissue-like hydrogel for artificial muscles to make soft robots move.

The project was spearheaded by Negin Bouzari, a PhD candidate in chemical engineering, and involved several undergraduate students — including chemistry student Melanie Bouzanne, Micahel Ali of nanotechnology engineering and Nrushanth Suthaharan of biomedical engineering — who were brought onboard to help by her supervisor, Dr. Hamad Shahsavan.

The students were hired through Waterloo’s co-op program, which enables students to pair academic learning with up to two years of paid work experience.

University of Waterloo talent is not just keeping pace with artificial intelligence, it is helping define how organizations actually use it.

At Toronto Tech Week, Waterloo students and alumni will join the digital and technology arm of Compass Digital, North America’s largest hospitality provider, for a forward-looking event exploring how companies are integrating AI into everyday operations in ways that create real value.

The talk focuses on what it takes to turn promising ideas into systems that work at scale and the kind of talent required to make that happen.

Among the featured speakers are Waterloo alumni and current Compass Data and AI staff Meghan LaCoste (BASc ’24) and Sahir Bandali (BMath ’25). Their careers reflect how expectations in the field are shifting as AI matures.
