Depth perception without binocular vision, what really happens?

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome Dr. Preetirupa Devi, Postdoctoral Fellow, for a VSRSS Seminar titled “Effect of Absence of Binocularity on Depth Perception and Depth‑Related Visuomotor Tasks.”

Dr. Devi shared compelling findings from studies examining depth‑related performance under complete absence of binocularity, degradation, and optical blur. Her insights sparked thoughtful discussion and gave our grad students a deeper understanding of how visual mechanisms shape everyday actions.

A huge thank you to Dr. Devi for her time, expertise, and truly fascinating presentation.

A day full of connection, learning, and community at Turtle Island Indigenous Science Conference.

As the platinum sponsors of this year’s event, we were honoured to host a booth and share our Pan‑Canadian Indigenous Strategy during our presentation. Dr. Andre Stanberry, Dr. Sarah MacIver, Dr. Deborah Jones, and Dr. Dana Blakolmer led an insightful session on supporting Indigenous learners, improving access to eye care in Indigenous communities, and advancing culturally informed approaches to vision health.

We were also grateful to spend the day alongside many Indigenous vendors showcasing beautiful artwork, jewelry, dream catchers, and more.

The Turtle Island Indigenous Science Conference is still underway — today is the final day, and you can find them at the STC. For more information, check out their website: https://bit.ly/4nSGCoc

Please join us from 3:30 - 4:30pm on May 25th.

Join us as the School of Optometry & Vision Science shares its Pan‑Canadian Indigenous Strategy — a multipronged initiative rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to culturally informed care.

This session will highlight the strategy’s core pillars; supporting Indigenous learners, co‑developing pathways and models of eye and vision care and strengthening education and training to ensure optometric care is culturally grounded. Participants will also hear from alumni and faculty who have delivered optometric care in First Nations communities across Canada.

Our speakers include:
Dr. Andre Stanberry
Dr. Sarah MacIver
Dr. Deborah Jones
Dr. Dana Blakolmer

The school is eager to continue building relationships with First Nations communities to help shape future collaboration and partnership opportunities. The session will conclude with a Q&A to encourage dialogue.

We hope to see you there. You can register through the link in our bio.
