Ramiz Razzak ’18 (Pure and Applied Science) is one of 11 Canadians who has just been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. He will head to Oxford University in the fall of 2022 to undertake fully-sponsored post-graduate studies and become part of a global community of people dedicated to solving humanity’s challenges.
Ramiz is the fifth graduate in the College’s history to be have been bestowed such an honour, the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international scholarship program in the world.
Hailing from Collège Jean-de-la-Mennais high school, Ramiz received an entrance scholarship to Marianopolis and was later elected president of the Marianopolis Student Union and secretary-general of the award-winning Model United Nations team, while serving diligently on the institution’s Board of Governors and Academic Council. In his final semester, he was awarded the Quebec Lieutenant Governors’ Youth Medal for his stellar contributions to the College community.
Accepted by an early admission decision to Harvard University, Ramiz is now in his fourth year, studying Applied Mathematics and Economics with a secondary in Philosophy. A John Harvard Scholar and a Prize Fellow at the Joint Center for History and Economics, Ramiz researches the monetary and fiscal tools that can be used to manage economic crises. Outside of the classroom, he has led Harvard's Federal Reserve Challenge team to a second-place finish at the largest economics competition in the United States, and he co-organizes World Model United Nations, an international policy conference that hosts over 1500 participants annually. Ramiz also enjoys teaching macroeconomics and getting involved with campus organizations focused on economic advocacy and international student life. At Oxford, he intends to pursue an MPhil in Economic and Social History.
“We at Marianopolis couldn’t be prouder of Ramiz. This is both an amazing achievement and a natural next step for this truly exceptional young man who has shone in his outstanding commitment to academic excellence and community leadership at the College and beyond,” said Marianopolis Director General Christian C***o.
