Last month, the School of Trades and Technology welcomed 19 Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers from across Canada for a three-week Skilled Trades Foundations program.
As the only participating institution to offer exposure to multiple trades, we delivered hands-on training in: welding, carpentry, electrical, small engine repair, beginner drone operations, CPR-C, WHMIS/TDG, fall protection, and amateur radio communications.
The students also got a city infrastructure tour featuring a behind-the-scenes look at Yukon Energy's Whitehorse Rapids Generating Station, the Transportation Museum, the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site, the Whitehorse Fish Ladder, and Miles Canyon.
Participants built their own boot boxes, fabricated fire pits, wired electrical circuits, disassembled and reassembled small engines, and experienced YukonU's world-class trades facilities.
They connected with 11 different School of Trades and Continuing Studies faculty members, Yukon First Nation Education Directorate partners during their riverboat build, and our cherished Elders Lounge.
The program introduced youth to skilled trades pathways while showcasing the unique opportunities available in the Yukon.
As interest in northern infrastructure, resilience, and Arctic sovereignty continues to grow, we are proud to host initiatives such as this one to meet Canada's northern priorities.
