Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a vision of justice that was global in scope and moral in depth. He spoke not only about civil rights, but about economic justice, labor rights, housing, education, and peace. He challenged institutions including universities to serve as spaces of moral inquiry and public accountability. Education, in King’s view, was not neutral; it was either a force for liberation or a mechanism that reinforced inequality.

Today is not just a day to honour his legacy. As workers in higher education it is a reminder that we have the responsibility to continue to uphold his values in our daily lives.

This is one reason why Unions matter. We don't just fight for our members, we fight for workers everywhere. Union busting profits companies and CEO's. The more workers organize the better working conditions become for everyone.

Solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Timmins.Rejecting an unfair contract is fair to all out members.

Solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Timmins.
Rejecting an unfair contract is fair to all out members.

Transit workers in Timmins, Ontario, began a strike today after voting down a tentative agreement that would introduce divisions within the workplace.

“Transit workers in Timmins have been among of the lowest-paid in the province, and frustration has been building for years,” said Rosanna Moreau, the secretary-treasurer for CUPE 1544. “One of the main reasons members rejected this deal was that it would mean service workers and drivers would no longer be paid the same. We want to be providing safe, reliable transit for Timmins residents, not helping the employer sow division in the workplace.”

Even with the city’s proposed wage increases, some job classifications would remain well below those at other employers in the region.
