Read about PA Dan Fillion's experience with becoming a Physician Assistant
Dan Fillion’s path to becoming a Physician Assistant took a few unexpected turns — but every step brought him closer to where he’s meant to be.
With eight years of experience in Psychiatry, Fillion brings both compassion and expertise to his role, supporting patients experiencing some of life’s most difficult moments.
Fillion currently works with the Psychiatric Consultation Service in the Adult Emergency Department at Health Sciences Centre (HSC), where he strives to make a difference every day.
“This area truly combines two of my biggest interests in medicine: Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine,” he said. “I strive to provide compassionate care to psychiatric patients arriving at our emergency department. It’s a challenging but incredibly rewarding environment where collaboration and trust are essential.”
Working alongside psychiatrists, residents, liaison nurses and emergency physicians, Fillion plays a key role in providing timely psychiatric assessments, supporting treatment planning and ensuring continuity of care for patients awaiting admission.
“Our collaborative approach allows us to respond more rapidly to consultations and manage high patient volumes more effectively,” he explained. “I think my consistent presence helps provide stability for both patients and our team.”
Physician Assistants are vital members of Manitoba’s healthcare teams — bringing skill, compassion and teamwork to every patient interaction. Tomorrow is National Physician Assistant Day, a time to celebrate their contributions and the lasting impact they make on the health and well-being of our communities.
