The Qualico Bridge to Success (QBTS) Program has supported more than 500 first-year Indigenous students navigate their transition to university with confidence.

The first QBTS cohorts gathered in 2016-17. Ten years later, new students continue to connect with the program's dedicated advising, peer support and programming through events like Indigenous Student Orientation.

This month, we are shining the Indigenous Colleague Connect spotlight on Lily Peters, Student Advisor/Program Coordinator

What brought you to UM? I wanted to return to Winnipeg, where I grew up, and to support Indigenous students. I’m also excited to work with the Qualico Bridge to Success (QBTS) program. In my career, I’ve seen how important it is to help students transition to post-secondary, and as the QBTS coordinator, I’m able to provide that guidance to Indigenous students as they begin their journey.

What has been your most rewarding accomplishment? Seeing Indigenous students I’ve instructed, recruited, or advised walk across the stage at convocation. That moment is what motivates me most—student success.

What’s the best advice you can give to help plan a career rather than simply work to keep a job? Do what you’re passionate about—otherwise it’s just a job. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone to look for new opportunities. And remember, everyone’s career journey is different.

Colleague/team who is deserving of a “shout-out”: Bailey Hendry! She has been a wonderful colleague who helped me transition into this role and her dedication to Indigenous students has been inspiring.

Your Indigenous recommendation (ex. Podcast, book, movie, business): Indian Horse (2017). So powerful and shows a glimpse into what Indigenous children faced in residential school and perseverance.

As part of its deep commitment to furthering Truth and Reconciliation, the Robson Hall, Faculty of Law, University of Manitoba has launched the Phil Fontaine Professorship in Indigenous Law and Economic Reconciliation.

Named for an individual who has devoted his life to furthering Indigenous rights in Canada, the Phil Fontaine Professorship was made possible by generous support from community supporters. Professor Brenda Gunn of the Faculty of Law is the inaugural appointee.

This month, we are shining the Indigenous Colleague Connect spotlight on Myah Scott, Assistant to the Director, Indigenous Leadership Programming

What brought you to UM? The beautiful campus, the Indigenous research and community here!

What is your favourite part of your position? Getting to work in Migizii Agamik! It's not only a beautiful building, but seeing and talking to students, staff, and others that pass through, hearing the stories that come through the building, and the smiles and laughter that exist here, it makes the job even better.

What has been your biggest motivator? The love I have for community. It's been the foundation for all the work I've done, and all the work I hope to do. I'm really grateful that being a part of the UM community allows me to amplify Indigenous voices and contribute to a growing, positive and strong community that uplifts one another.

Colleague/team who is deserving of a “shout-out”: Elder Norman and Whisper! I have really appreciated how much of a joyful light they both have been for me since starting at the University.

🎓 Congratulations to the first graduating class of the Interlake Reserves Tribal Council (IRTC) Learning Hub!

The IRTC Learning Hub is a partnership between the Interlake Reserves Tribal Council, the University of Manitoba and the Mastercard Foundation EleV Program, bringing post-secondary education closer to home for Indigenous learners.

This past Saturday, we celebrated 15 Indigenous graduates who completed the Kenanow Bachelor of Education program through the University College of the North.

As certified teachers, these graduates will return to their communities, bringing knowledge, leadership and inspiration to future generations.

Congratulations to each graduate, and to the families, Elders, faculty, staff and community members who supported them along the way. We look forward to the positive impact this graduating class will have across their communities.🧡

Hi Gabrielle! 👋

This month, we are shining the Indigenous Colleague Connect spotlight on Gabrielle Desrochers, Events Manager, Indigenous Engagement & Communications.

Nation (Community and/or self-declaration): Red River Métis

What brought you to UM? I had only ever heard amazing things about working at UM, so when the Events Manager position was posted, I felt like it was made for me. With my background in sport event management, I was excited to take on a new challenge and apply my experience in a different setting. The opportunity was especially meaningful because, as a UM alumna, I was eager to contribute to a community that helped shape who I am today.

What is your favourite part of your position? The relationships and sense of community that I get to build here are definitely my favourite!

What has been your most rewarding accomplishment? Being part of the planning and ex*****on committee for the Annual Traditional Graduation Pow Wow—It’s such a special day, and being able to play a role in bringing it to life is incredibly meaningful. Being a part of an event that honours the achievements of Indigenous graduates warms my heart and fills me with pride.

Colleague/team who is deserving of a “shout-out”: Kookum Karen for always being a grounding presence and sharing her wisdom.
