SPEED TOUR: PART 2 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️

Room 321 – The Reconciliation Interpretive Space was created in collaboration with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. The space is dedicated to sharing the history and legacy of the Canadian residential school system, exploring Indigenous education past and present, and envisioning possibilities for the future.

Room 308 - This space is home to both the Student Council of the Undergraduate Education Students’ Association and the executive of the Education Graduate Students’ Association.

Room 322 - Gaa-maawabing serves as an Indigenous community and learning space: a location for teaching, learning, and gathering where First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures, knowledges, and experiences may be shared.

Room 333 - Anna and Inga Storgaard Learning Commons is a vibrant study space for use by Education students, professors, instructors, and support staff. It is also the faculty’s K-12 lesson planning and literature library collection.

Room 328 - The Digital Literacies Lab in the Faculty of Education is a digital media production space used for research, teaching, learning, knowledge mobilization, and professional development among faculty members and undergraduate and graduate students. The lab is equipped with audio and video production tools, podcasting equipment, generative AI software, and editing stations.

Room 340 - The drama and music space is a versatile teaching, research, and presentation facility for students, faculty, and staff. It features a black box-style theatre equipped with professional lighting and sound equipment. The adjoining music room is equipped with a variety of musical instruments used in schools across the province. The two rooms can be used separately or merged into one room for larger classes and musical presentations.

Room 342 – The art room is a creative hub where future educators develop art-making skills, explore visual learning, and discover the role of the arts in inspiring and engaging students.

It’s been too quiet around here! We’re really looking forward to when year 1 B.Ed. students join us for Orientation next week. 😊

It will be their first chance to meet our Academic Advisors and staff, explore the Education building, learn about their exciting practicum placements, and most importantly – get to know their fellow classmates.

There will also be sessions about opportunities with CanU Canada | Youth Mentorship and Northern Practicum placements. And let’s not forget the free coffee and donuts!

Traditional approaches to sustainability often ask us to think about how nature meets human needs: the food we eat, the water we drink, and the materials we use. But what happens when we pause and encounter nature not only as a resource, but as something worthy of our attention, responsibility and gratitude?

Yesterday, PBDE and B.Ed.. students in the Education for Sustainability course took part in a birding walk on the Fort Garry Campus with the UM Indigenous Birding Club (). The group observed 15 bird species and had the opportunity to experience the campus in a different way.

Highlights included watching an Osprey bring a live fish, possibly a Yellow Perch, to its young and feed it at the nest, an adult and juvenile Swainson’s Hawk soaring overhead, a Pied-billed Grebe and Hooded Merganser diving for food; and a Great Blue Heron patiently hunting at the edge of a pond. 🐦‍⬛🦅

Ever wonder who helps shape the policies that make campuses more inclusive and welcoming? 🤔

This summer, Undergraduate Research Award recipient Joanne San Juan has been digging into a big question: how do researchers - and critical research itself - influence the policies universities create around equity, diversity and inclusion?

Think of it this way: when a university wants to create a policy that helps students feel seen, supported, and included, where do those ideas come from? Joanne’s research, under supervision of Dr. Merli Tamtik and team, explores how asking tough questions and considering different perspectives can help shape policies that better reflect the experiences and needs of all students.

From analyzing interviews to contributing to conference presentations, she’s getting a behind-the-scenes look at how research can lead to real change.

We’re grateful to Joanne for all her great work!

We're celebrating several Faculty of Education faculty members who have recently received Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight Development Grants that will support of their academic research. They are exploring how education can better support students and communities, while tackling challenges that matter today and helps generate new ideas for tomorrow.

Research funding is a key part of that process. It gives us the opportunity to pursue emerging questions, work with community partners, and turn promising ideas into meaningful impact.

For our students, this means learning in a faculty where discovery is happening every day. They study alongside researchers whose work is influencing education beyond the university and helping shape the future of the field.

The following research will be supported by the SSHRC grants:

What happens when educators teach and learn through video podcasting? 🎥🎤🎬

As part of a two-week intensive course on multiliteracies, post-bacc and graduate-level students engaged in a live video podcast simulation that combined role-play, collaboration, and digital multimodal learning.

Taking on various production roles (e,g. podcast hosts, guests, directors, and videographers), they explored authentic educational dilemmas using multiple forms of communication while managing the technical and creative aspects of a live production.

The activity highlighted the power of learning by design, agency, and multimodal meaning-making to create engaging and inclusive learning experiences for diverse learners.

Congratulations to Dr. Joe Curnow on receiving the Rh Chrysalis Awards for Exceptional Early-Career Recognition. These awards are an important opportunity for UM to celebrate researchers across disciplines who are leading transformative impacts in society.

Dr. Curnow has established herself as an internationally recognized scholar whose innovative research explores how learning drives social change. Through groundbreaking work on social movements, activism, and community-led approaches to justice and safety, she has advanced both educational research and community impact.

Her impressive achievements include prestigious awards and fellowships, significant research funding, influential publications, and leadership roles within the learning sciences community. Dr. Curnow’s creativity, scholarly excellence, and commitment to more equitable futures make her a truly deserving recipient of this honour.

This captivating novel follows sixteen-year-old Aubrey as she grapples with grief, guilt, and unsettling visions, all while discovering the strength found in Anishinaabe teachings, family, and community. The story blends the physical and spiritual worlds in a powerful journey of healing and self-discovery.

What makes this novel especially unique is its connection to Amy’s research. The Moth Dreamer grew out of her work on Indigenous storying as a method of knowledge sharing, drawing on sacred stories, the Seven Sacred Teachings, and cultural protocols around ethics and behaviour.
