Meet Annika – B.Ed. student candidate and Winter 2026 CanU Education leader.

Last winter, she led a CanU academy focused on multimedia literacy, introducing students to photography, videography, and podcasting. As the photography lead, she encouraged students to explore campus through a creative lens, capturing everything from striking architecture to winter sunsets.

For Annika, the experience was about much more than teaching technical skills. Working closely with students helped her develop the adaptability, relationship-building, and listening skills that are essential in the classroom.

By seeing how students approached projects from their own unique perspectives, she gained valuable insight into how different learners engage with the world around them. As she prepares for a career in education, CanU has reinforced the importance of creating learning environments where curiosity, creativity, and student voice can thrive.

"Everyone sees things differently. Being able to capture that through photography was an amazing way to expose myself to the different perspectives that so many individuals have."

Math meets art in Mme Ostermann ‘s class!

Fractions can be a hard concept for kids to understand sometimes, but when you put fractions into something that requires them to take a hands on approach sometimes it will just click.

Radial paper relief sculptures create 3D designs by arranging folded paper shapes using basic origami folds around a central point, frequently dividing a base paper into sections such as 4th, 6th, or 8th to ensure rotational symmetry. These projects teach fractions by having the students calculate how many folded units fit around the center.

For this project, we folded our base into 8 equal parts, one of our folds we learned needed 8 pieces to fill the circle from the center point therefore each piece represents 1/8 of the radial design. The two other folds we learned needed 4 pieces to fill the circle from the center point therefore each piece represents 1/4 of the radial design.

This interdisciplinary approach from UM B.Ed. grad shows the program’s focus on helping future educators connect learning across subjects and bring curriculum to life through hands-on experiences.

What a night for our alumni with UM PhD candidate Ash Alberg and Dr. Samuel Bautista Lazo! 🌼
 
During a one-of-a-kind workshop at the Faculty of Education, participants learned how Manitoba-grown coreopsis and Oaxacan cochineal, a natural red dye derived from insects, can be combined to create unique colours that connect two distinct landscapes and traditions.
 
Samuel shared the cultural and historical significance of natural dyeing, while Ash demonstrated how these practices can be incorporated into classroom learning. Guests then created their own naturally dyed cotton hankies, experiencing firsthand the creativity, knowledge and connection that emerge through hands-on making.
 
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this inspiring evening of learning and community, and to our presenters who shared their wealth of knowledge and traditions – it was truly a gift.

September 23, 2026 marked the official opening of the Truth and Reconciliation Room at the Faculty of Education.

Located in room 321 in the U of M Education Building, it was created in partnership with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

We welcomed Elders in Residence, partners, community members, staff, faculty, and students. Our Elder in Residence, Helen Settee spoke about why when we speak about reconciliation, we always need to include truth first.

The Truth & Reconciliation room is dedicated to sharing the history and legacy of the Canadian residential school system, exploring Indigenous education past and present, and envisioning possibilities for the future.

Through rotating exhibitions, multimedia displays, cultural materials, and public educational events, the space will support learning, reflection, and dialogue for its visitors.

Accessible to students, educators, community members, and visitors, it will serve as a place to deepen understanding of Indigenous histories, knowledges, cultures, and educational experiences while advancing the University’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

What does reconciliation in action look like?

For a group of B.Ed., Masters,, and Post-Bacc students, it meant learning with the Land, building meaningful relationships, and learning alongside Anishinaabek from Turtle Island through the Faculty of Education's "Wellness Through the Land" course.

As students reflected on their experiences, many shared how the course deepened their connection to culture and identity, challenged their understanding of teaching and learning, and inspired them to bring new approaches into their future classrooms.
