After graduating, Itiovie Ayeni wants to work in services supporting refugees, a cause about which she’s passionate. So, when she saw the courses, she knew she needed to take Refugees and Displacement: Learning to Extend Hospitality, co-taught by Mary Jo Leddy and Dan Epp-Tiessen.

“Although I had known I wanted to work with refugees, I feel like this class sealed it for me,” Itiovie said. “Mary Jo has been working with refugees for more than 30 years, and just hearing first-hand the struggles that people have to go through, it just resonated with me and made me say, ‘yes, this is what I want to do’.”

When Reezwana Yadallee heard that Mary Jo Leddy was teaching a course at the , she told herself she could not miss it. “She inspires a lot of us just because of her way of seeing the world,” Reezwana said.

Reezwana is studying Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies while also working in employment and income social services for the provincial government. She took “Refugees and Displacement, Learning to Extend Hospitality” with Leddy and Dan Epp-Tiessen and wanted to bring her learning back to the office because she interacts with refugees on a regular basis through her work.

Katie Anderson signed up for the because with the notoriously full schedule of a music student, she wanted to spread out her course load. But the class quickly became so much more than just getting another credit under her belt. She took “Creation and Community in Biblical and Indigenous Perspectives” with Sunder John Boopalan and Danny Zacharias. “I’m navigating what it means to be Indigenous and a Christian at the same time and how those can coexist together, so the course was super interesting to me,” Katie says. We’re excited to announce that we’ve added a new course to our line up! Susanne Guenther Loewen will be teaching “Theological Perspectives on Trauma and Healing” during the first week of CSOP, June 6-10, 2022.

This course will explore how individual and collective experiences of trauma - the result of direct and systemic forms of violence - are refracted through the beliefs and practices of the Christian faith, especially notions of forgiveness, suffering, redemption, and the cross. Taking cues from recent feminist theologians who are increasingly drawing from trauma theory in their analyses of violence, especially sexual and gender-based violence, participants will explore a variety of intersectional and decolonizing voices informed by praxis within and beyond the church. Participants will look at doing theology in ways that recognize and address trauma while working toward healing.

Apply now to take this course with Susanne in June!

We’re excited to announce that you can now apply for the 2022 CSOP! Check out our list of fantastic new courses on our website at https://csop.cmu.ca/courses/.

This year we are planning to hold in-person courses, following current COVID-19 restrictions and recommendations, and will not have any online course options available at this time. Unfortunately, we will not be accepting applications to CSOP 2022 for international participants who are not already in Canada or the US. Due to COVID-19 regulations regarding quarantines and vaccination requirements for international visitors to Canada, we are unable to accommodate participants who would need to arrive early and isolate in preparation for a week or two at CSOP. At this time, we are planning for only in-person courses in 2022 and will not have any online courses available. We hope to be able to welcome international participants to join us again in-person at CSOP in 2023.
