The Desautels Concert Series continues with ‘Far and Familiar’, an afternoon of memory, myth, and musical storytelling.

Viðarneistí presents a program exploring stories of people: who we are, where we come from, and the experiences that shape us. Featuring works commissioned by and arranged for the duo, the concert celebrates real and imagined folk traditions, reimagined through their distinctive sound world.

Usher in a new concert season with repertoire that inspires contemplation and remembrance

Join the UM Concert Band & Wind Ensemble for an evening of music that invites you to pause, look back, and look forward. Paying homage to our environment, humanity and history, the program features music by Steven Bryant, Yukiko Nishimura, Oscar Navarro, Ben Horne, Sally McCune-Lamb and Darius Milhaud.

Build your own day: join a masterclass in your area, sit in on presentations, catch a midday concert by our students, tour the building and ask current students anything. Lunch is on us.

On October 9th, the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) and the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra (Winnipeg Youth Orchestras) share the stage for an evening of overtures and a symphony, ending with both orchestras playing side by side!

The WYSO opens the concert with Mozart’s Idomeneo Overture. The UMSO follows with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, “Reformation.” After intermission, the program continues with Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture. To close, the two orchestras join forces for Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture.

Royal Winnipeg Ballet Artistic Director Christopher Stowell and Desautels Professor Will Bonness share the details of this exciting collaboration.

Ballet meets jazz. 🎷🩰
 
Royal Winnipeg Ballet Artistic Director Christopher Stowell and Desautels professor Will Bonness talk about bringing Balanchine’s “Who Cares?” to the stage with a twist: Gershwin’s music, reimagined for a live jazz quartet.
 
“As far as I know, this is the first time the whole work has been danced in this way,” says Stowell.
 
Bonness re-wrote Gershwin’s pieces for a small jazz ensemble and will perform alongside fellow Desautels faculty Karly Epp (voice), Karl Kohut (bass), and Fabio Ragnelli (drums). Dancers from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet bring Balanchine’s choreography to life, and the afternoon opens the Desautels Concert Series’ 2026–27 season.

The Desautels Concert Series opens its 2026–27 season with Balanchine and Gershwin, an afternoon of jazz and dance.

Dancers from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet perform Who Cares?, a Balanchine® Ballet, set to the music of George Gershwin — featuring beloved works including The Man I Love, My One and Only, and I Got Rhythm.

Whether you’re a music major or just curious, there’s a course here for you — from songwriting and jazz history to electroacoustic music and the business side of the industry. No prior music background required for most of these courses.

Business of Music — MUSC 3016, A01
Fall 2026: Thursdays, 5:30 - 8:30 pm

Unlock the business side of music! Musicians of any genre will learn from industry pros, with topics ranging from marketing and contracts to artist management and funding.

Introduction to Composition — MUSC 3820
Fall 2026: Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays 1:30-2:20 pm

Introduction to Composition explores basic components, considerations, and approaches pertaining to music composition. Topics include the compositional process, pitch logic, rhythm, timbre, texture, form, collaboration, rehearsal, and performance. Classes feature lectures, including listening and analysis, as well as exercises and masterclasses. The course culminates with a recital of selected student compositions.

Electroacoustic Music — MUSC 3650
Fall 2026: Tuesdays/Thursdays 10:00 - 11:15 am

Whether your background is in classical music, jazz or popular music, this course will broaden your perspective on what music can be. Instead of working within a single genre, you will explore how any sound can become the foundation for a musical work. You will work with microphones and computer software to create your own music.

Songwriting 1: Mechanics of Songwriting — MUSC 3002
Fall 2026: Mondays, 4:30 - 7:30 pm

This class teaches the craft of songwriting—structure, melody, lyrics, production, and arrangement—through lectures, discussion, and both solo and collaborative writing exercises leading to an end-of-term recital. No background in Western music notation or an instrument is required.

Discovering Jazz — MUSC 1040
Fall 2026: Tuesdays/Thursdays 1:00-2:15 pm

This course is a comprehensive guide for listening to and understanding the genre of jazz. Students will examine how the musical elements of jazz such as improvisation and swing rhythm have evolved and developed from the 1800s to today. This course will also profile some of the
