Centre for Human Rights Research The CHRR brings people & groups doing human rights research together - in & outside the U of M.

Established in 2012, the Centre for Human Rights Research (CHRR) brings together people and organizations – both within and outside the University of Manitoba – to enhance interdisciplinary and collaborative research capacity, create richer training opportunities for students, and facilitate the fusion of research-driven knowledge, public policy and intellectual debate on issues related to human rights and social justice. The centre aims to facilitate research that is both academically rigorous and accessible to the public. Human rights research and teaching has been identified by the University of Manitoba as one of its strategic priorities.

CRYSTAL GAIL FRASER is Gwichyà Gwich’in and an associate professor in history and Indigenous studies at the University of Alberta. Crystal is the author of By Strength, We Are Still Here: Indigenous Peoples and Indian Residential Schooling in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. In 2026, Crystal won the Governor-General’s Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research.

Today, we have Somashree Chattapadhya (she/her). Somashree is is a graduate student at the Natural Resources Institute. Her research focuses on community-led disaster management, land-based relational research, and knowledge co-production between Indigenous and scientific knowledge systems.

Erin Sinclair is an Anishinaabe-Irish ikwe from St. Andrews, Manitoba and a proud member of Peguis First Nation. She is completing her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Manitoba under the supervision of Dr. Katherine Starzyk.

Her doctoral research, “Educating for Change: Increasing Support for First Nations Water Rights,” will address one of Canada’s most pressing human rights and social justice issues: the lack of access to clean and safe drinking water in First Nations.

Erin says, "For my dissertation, I am examining how brief educational interventions may increase public support of First Nations water rights. With feedback from affected community members, such as my own, I will develop and test educational interventions that focus on the ongoing impacts of inadequate water access, the feasibility of government action, and access to clean water as a fundamental human right."

This month's emerging researcher is Jessica Laus. Jessica is currently pursuing a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Manitoba.

Jessica Laus grew up in the great city of Detroit. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wayne State University, a Master of Science from the London School of Economics, and she worked in the field of international diplomacy for well over five years. Jessica's research interests include youth peacebuilders, systems transformation, and the great City of Detroit. A practitioner and advocate of restorative practices and Kingian Nonviolence, she is most proud of her work cultivating youth leadership in New Jersey and Winnipeg. An important part of Jessica's praxis has been to learn from and with community, particularly youth, and she has engaged in participatory action research through the guise of community organizing and advocacy for the better part of her academic and professional career. Jessica is committed to co-creating spaces where all youth feel that they belong, where their sense of agency and leadership are valued, and where they can cultivate and experience joy on their own terms.

Jessica's advice for other emerging researchers and students is to "first reflect on your core values; engage in self and community care through the research process; and commit to collaborative, community-led practices early on in their career."
