Speaker: Dr. Colby Gaudet (Dalhousie University)

“Using Sacramental Records to Study Lay Authority in Early Modern North America”

How did Catholic communities maintain their religious traditions when priests were absent?

Join Dr. Colby Gaudet as he explores how Acadian and Mi'kmaq communities in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries sustained sacramental life through the leadership of laypeople. Drawing on historical sacramental records, this lecture highlights the important roles community members played in preserving religious practices and shaping Catholic life beyond the presence of clergy.

Dr. Gaudet is a SSHRC Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of History at Dalhousie University, specializing in kinship and religion in Acadian communities.
