Big congratulations to Dr. Cedric Tremblay on receiving a $550,000 Canadian Cancer Society Emerging Scholar Research Grant!

His research is focused on one important question: Why does leukemia sometimes come back after treatment?

By studying the small number of leukemia cells that survive chemotherapy, Dr. Tremblay and his team hope to uncover new ways to stop relapse before it starts, leading to better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.

This research builds on critical preliminary work supported by CancerCare Manitoba Foundation donors and is now being advanced through the generous support of Canadian Cancer Society donors from coast to coast.

Congratulations to Dr. Yale Michaels on receiving a prestigious Canadian Cancer Society Emerging Scholar Research Grant valued at $550,000 over five years.

Dr. Michaels's research focuses on making CAR T-cell therapy, a groundbreaking cancer treatment, more accessible to patients. By using stem cells from umbilical cord blood to create cancer-fighting immune cells, his team hopes to lower costs, reduce treatment delays, and expand access for patients who may not otherwise qualify for CAR-T therapy.

This project is a collaboration with Dr. Harinad Maganti (Canadian Blood Services), Dr. David Szwajcer (CCMB), Dr. Jody Haigh (CCMB), Dr. Versha Banerji (CCMB), Dr. David Knapp (University de Montreal) and our patient partners Sandra Hojlo and Tess Bernacki.

This innovative work has the potential to transform cancer care and bring new hope to patients and families.

CancerCare Manitoba Physician-Scientists Lead Practice-Changing Research

Two CancerCare Manitoba physician-scientists, Dr. Ryan Zarychanski and Dr. Brett Houston, helped lead a landmark Canadian study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study found that a low-cost medication can reduce the need for blood transfusions during major surgery without increasing the risk of dangerous blood clots.

More than 8,300 patients participated, including over 5,000 people undergoing cancer surgery.

The findings could improve care for millions of patients worldwide and help conserve millions of units of blood every year.

Congratulations to Dr. Athanasios Zovoilis and his team, who recently received a Manitoba Solutions Grant through Research Manitoba.

Their project, AI4Omics-MB, will explore how artificial intelligence can be applied to genetic data from Manitoba patients to improve cancer detection, support more personalized treatment, and enhance clinical decision-making.

By leveraging data from the Manitoba Tumour Bank and PrairieGen, this research is grounded in the needs of Manitoba patients, healthcare providers, and our healthcare system.

The project will also help build local expertise in AI and genomics, strengthen research partnerships, and further position Manitoba as a leader in AI-driven cancer care.
