The vibe at the 2026 BIPOC Graduate Alumni Mentorship Dinner was truly unmatched! ✨

We gathered at East India Company for an evening of connection, community, and incredible food. It was inspiring to see our alumni show such generosity, sharing their wisdom and shedding light on the academic and professional journeys of our current students.

There is so much power in seeing yourself reflected in the success of those who walked the path before you.

We ❤️ 3MT! The University of Winnipeg 3-Minute Thesis Competition finals wrapped up at 6:30 yesterday and we were grinning ear to ear. As always, each contestant absolutely wowed us!

Congratulations to Tabitha Evans (MA, Environmental and Social Change), who took home the People’s Choice Award for “Powering Sustainable Energy Transitions Through Diversity”.

The judges selected Imogen Bellinger (MSc, Bioscience, Technology, and Public Policy) for the $1,000 Second Place Prize for her talk titled "Can They Cope? Testing the Limits of Brook Trout in a Changing Climate".

Ishadie Namir (MSc, Applied Computer Science and Society) won the $2,000 First Place Prize. In her research, presented in three minutes as "Seeing From Space: Helping AI Describe Satellite Images Accurately", Ishadie develops methods to help artificial intelligence (AI) describe satellite images more accurately by teaching it to connect text and images through contrastive learning.

Yesterday we also celebrated the inaugural recipients of the Faculty Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship! Doctor Caleb Hasler and Doctor Sheela Ramanna were announced as the first University of Winnipeg faculty members to receive this honour. It made for a serendipitous evening: Dr. Hasler supervises the 3MT second-place recipient Imogen Bellinger, and Dr. Ramanna supervises first-place recipient Ishadie Namir!

Thank you to our judges, Jennifer Cleary, Paul Samyn, Niigaan Sinclair, and Sherri Walsh, for supporting and encouraging graduate student research at UW!

Yesterday, March 8, was International Women’s Day. Though offline for the weekend, we were celebrating the contributions and achievements of women in graduate research and scholarship. At The University of Winnipeg and beyond, their work continues to shape knowledge, innovation, and communities.

Here is just a small sampling of times when the work and achievements of UW's graduate students and faculty members made UWinnipeg’s news. Their stories and many more are available at news.uwinnipeg.ca.

1. Dr. Emily Chase (Biology) conducts pioneering research at Lake Winnipeg: Dr. Emily Chase is the first person to ever study algal viruses in Lake Winnipeg, work that will contribute to building more accurate climate change models for the lake.

2. Dr. Patricia Fitzpatrick (Geography) co-authors a new report which sheds light on the importance of impact assessments for Manitobans: “The Government of Manitoba needs to step up and ensure provincial requirements are modernized and strong enough to protect Manitobans,” said Dr. Fitzpatrick. “There is also a need for better cooperation with other levels of government, especially the federal government, as new IA coordination agreements are developed.”

3. International Falling Walls Competition: MSc in Applied Computer Science and Society student (now alum!) Faith Akinyemi and MSc in Bioscience, Technology, and Public Policy alum Yujie Ren were selected to compete at Falling Walls Manitoba, a research pitch competition. Yujie Ren took home second-place in the province-wide competition open to undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and

4. UWinnipeg student receives MEIA award for environmental research work: Chathuri Mudalige, then student and now alum of the MSc in Environmental and Social Change, was awarded the Deb Tardiff Scholarship from Manitoba Environmental Industries Association (MEIA) in recognition of her academic standing, volunteer experience, and contributions to environmental sciences. Chathuri’s research used RNA sequencing to study chemical toxicity, a more ethical and efficient alternative to traditional testing using animal studies.
