We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Dr. Ida Bear. Ida took her final journey to the spirit world last Friday the 21st of November.
Dr. Bear was a beloved teacher, Cree language educator and a highly respected Elder who
touched the many lives of those she encountered.
She dedicated her journey and lifelong passion to the teaching of the Cree language at the
University of Winnipeg. I was blessed to know her as a colleague and as a mentor from my
earliest days at the UW (2011). Dr Bear was instrumental in translating the Fisher River
Cookbook into Cree syllabics- a true gift to all.
On a personal level, she was a great friend, guide and very valuable colleague in the
Indigenous Studies department.
She will be dearly missed by all of us. We send our sincere prayers to creator as her spirit
continues to guide us in a good way.
