Meet the Team!
Emily White is a first-year student in the Archival Studies stream of the Joint Master’s Program in History. She currently serves as the HGSA-ACA liaison for the UofM ACA Student Chapter.
Emily’s Major Research Paper focuses on archiving Indigenous disability history, particularly the experiences of Indigenous children who experienced illness and disability within Canada’s residential school system. Her work attempts to examine how archival records document the production and treatment of disability within residential schools and explore better ways to identify, preserve, describe, and make accessible records of disability while also considering how colonial archival practices have shaped or excluded Indigenous experiences of disability.
Emily loves archival work because it allows her to learn new things all the time, combining hands-on tasks like appraisal and reference with her long-time love of history and research. She is particularly interested in community outreach and the ways archives can build relationships with the communities represented in their collections, making archival spaces and records more accessible and meaningful to the public.
She hopes to work in provincial archives after she graduates, ideally in her home province of Alberta. In her spare time, Emily enjoys reading books, running, hiking, and spending time with friends and family.
