What if a simple saliva test could help personalize mental health treatment and reduce hospital stays?

A new Manitoba-based study is exploring how pharmacogenomics (PGx)—the science of how genetics affect medication response—could help clinicians choose the right psychotropic medication, at the right dose, sooner. Instead of months or years of trial and error, PGx testing can flag which medications are more likely to cause side effects, helping guide prescribing and even deprescribing.

Led by HSC_Winnipeg's Dr. Abdullah Maruf, PhD and Dr. Jitender Sareen, in collaboration with Dr. Chad Bousman, PhD, from Calgary, and supported by a $70,000 grant from the HSC Foundation, the PGx-Support study is testing whether free, non-invasive genetic testing for psychiatric patients can improve outcomes and lower health-care costs by shortening hospital stays. With testing covered for study participants and results delivered in just two weeks, the potential impact is significant—for patients and the system alike.
