University of Manitoba and University of Iceland Partnership Conference October 2026.

THEME: Resilience

The University of Manitoba and the University of Iceland invite proposals for a joint international conference exploring Resilience as a concept, practice, and lived experience across disciplines, communities, and regions. The conference will bring together scholars, practitioners, and community voices to examine how resilience is understood, enacted, challenged, and sustained in Nordic, Arctic, Indigenous, and global contexts.

The conference will take place over two days of academic panels in Winnipeg, followed by a third day dedicated to a cultural outing, designed to foster informal exchange and deepen place‑based understanding.

Deadline: June 1, 2026

Tonight is the first evening of the Jólasveinar (Icelandic Yule Lads). The Yule Lads are the sons of Grýla, the ogress, and Leppalúði.

They come down from the mountains where they live to visit the children of Iceland. Children leave shoes on their windowsills, from now until Christmas in anticipation of the Yule Lads visit. If a child has been good the Yule Lads leave a small gift 🎁 in the shoes, and if they have been naughty they receive a rotting potato!🥔

Eve of December 11: Stekkjarstaur (Sheep-Cote Clod): Harasses sheep, but is impaired by his stiff peg-legs 🐑
