Join us this Thursday for the first film screening during this year's Namibia Research Days 2026 in Windhoek and Basel

The Namibian film-maker Desiree Kahikopo Meiffret opens the movie days on Thursday with her romantic feature film “The White Line”. The plot revolves around the relationship between a Black female domestic servant and a White police man in the aftermath of Windhoek’s Old Location police shootings of 1959.

Research Colloquium Fall Semester 2026

Description: The colloquium addresses current debates in Namibian and Southern African Studies and provides a forum for conversations between students and local and international scholars, artists and activists. The regional focus is programmatic, but we offer multiple opportunities to reflect on the sessions, and situate them in broader discourses.

We nurture an intellectual milieu and knowledge practice that transcend rigid institutional and symbolic boundaries between the university and society, the Global South and North, and disciplines, fields, and practices. The colloquium is open to students from all levels and guests from within and beyond the university.

Als Nachfolge des 2024 eingestellten Afrika-Bulletin veröffentlicht das Afrika-Komitee in loser Folge Blog-Beiträge zu aktuellen Themen. Der jüngste Beitrag von Susy Greuter analysiert die dramatische Dynamik im Bereich der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit.

Auslaufmodell Entwicklungszusammenarbeit

Vorbei die Zeiten, als die UNO siegesstrahlend verkündete, dass die fünfzehn Milleniums-Entwicklungsziele (MDG, 2000-2015) erreicht werden konnten und damit die weltweite Ungleichheit etwas kleiner geworden sei.

Was hat seither die weltweiten Einschnitte in die Budgets der Entwicklungs- und der allgemeineren internationalen Zusammenarbeit ausgelöst? Corona, die realer werdende Bedrohung durch den Klimawandel und die Kriege am Rand des «Westens»? Liessen sie die Selbstsorge ins Zentrum rücken?

Oder waren es die – nicht mehr freiwilligen – Finanzverpflichtungen gegenüber «Entwicklungs»-Ländern aufgrund zugestandener Verantwortlichkeit für die Klimakatastrophen (wie z.B. der «Loss- and Damages-Fund» der COP27)? Der ab 2022 aufflammende «Bedarf» nach vermehrten Militärausgaben, oder die dräuende kapitalistische Krise? Die Schweiz steht mit ihren Mittel-Kürzungen in der internationalen Zusammenarbeit (IZA, resp. EZA) keineswegs alleine da.

⏰Reminder: Call for Papers (SGAS & VAD 2026 Conference)

📢Only a few days left until 11 January 2026 to submit your paper proposal for the joint conference of the Swiss Society for African Studies (SGAS/SSEA) and the Association for African Studies in Germany (VAD), taking place 26-28 August 2026 at the Universität Basel.

🌍Under the theme “African Perspectives on Global Transformations”, the conference invites scholars at all career stages to contribute to one of 77 panels across nine thematic streams. The conference theme responds to increasingly urgent calls for decolonization, epistemic justice, reparations, climate justice and restitution, under the conceptual header of planetary health and cosmopolitan flourishing. Based on this framework, the conference brings together approaches to examine past, present and future global transformations from a broad spectrum of disciplines and thematic areas.
