The Institute for European Global Studies is a research institute of the University of Basel. We regard the development of Europe from a global perspective and thus contribute to answering central questions of our time.

📢 New Issue Published: Global Europe – Research papers by MA Graduates European Global Studies

➡ Fabia Betschart sheds light on the environmental risks posed by abandoned yachts seized from sanctioned Russian owners. She reveals major gaps in EU environmental law and calls for clearer rules linking sanctions to environmental protection.
➡ Niamh O’Neill examines how political discourse and international law categorize actors in armed conflicts, highlighting tensions between fluid labels like “terrorist” and strict legal categories such as “combatant” or “civilian.”
➡ Giulia Schneitter analyses Switzerland’s role in Frontex amid allegations of illegal pushbacks. She argues that Switzerland must push for stronger human-rights safeguards to align its humanitarian values with its participation in the agency.

👏 The authors completed their MA in European Global Studies in 2024.

How did the modern zoo become a truly global institution based on a European model?

On 11 November 2025, the Institute for European Global Studies welcomed Oliver Hochadel (CSIC, Barcelona) for a Lunchtime Salon Discussion titled “The Emergence of the Global Zoo around 1900.”

Hochadel showed how international travellers, professional networks, and early zoo media helped spread ideas, techniques, and “best practices” across continents, turning a fundamentally European institution into a global one shaped by diverse local knowledge and multidirectional exchanges.

The event was jointly organized by Lars von Felten-Kury and Prof. Marie Muschalek (SNSF Professor of History, University of Basel) and concluded with a lively Q&A session.

Die Diplomfeier des Europainstituts fand am 31. Oktober 2025 mit den Absolvent:innen des Masterstudiengangs European Global Studies statt. Insgesamt 52 Absolvent:innen haben im Studienjahr 2024/25 das Studium abgeschlossen. Das Europainstitut gratuliert den neuen Alumnae und Alumni herzlich und wünscht ihnen alles Gute für ihren weiteren Lebensweg! 🎉

🗣️ Workshop Discussion with Prof. Sabine Lee on the value of Interdisciplinarity, Internationality and Intersectorality in the Humanities and Social Sciences

On 16 October 2025, the Institute for European Global Studies welcomed Prof. Sabine Lee, Professor of Modern History at the University of Birmingham, for a workshop titled "Hype or Hope? Do Interdisciplinarity, Internationality, and Intersectorality add value to Humanities and Social Sciences?".

In her workshop, Sabine Lee offered a passionate plea for the societal relevance of interdisciplinary research and the importance of bridging academia, policy, and the wider public. Drawing on insights from her extensive research—including the CHIBOW (Children Born of War) network and her AHRC-funded project on peacekeeper-fathered children in Haiti—she illustrated how cross-sectoral collaboration can generate meaningful social and political impact.

The discussion explored key questions about how universities can structurally support interdisciplinarity and how methodological distinctions between inter-, trans-, and multidisciplinarity influence research outcomes.

The event sparked a lively exchange on the institutional and epistemological implications of collaborative research, ultimately underlining the continued importance of European and global perspectives in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

In the new edited volume, co-edited by Christa Tobler and Helen Meenan, scholars and practitioners analyse age discrimination and consider how the legal framework might be reformed. The book examines the relevance of age discrimination across all age groups, with particular focus on older persons. Furthermore, it underlines the importance of effective legal protection, especially where age discrimination intersects with other forms of inequality.

On 20 October 2025, the Institute for European Global Studies welcomed Professor Joseph Torigian on his world tour presenting his latest book The Party's Interests Come First: The Life of Xi Zhongxun, Father of Xi Jinping.

The publication is the first English biography of Xi Zhongxun, a veteran revolutionary, senior Communist official, and father of China’s current leader. Based on more than ten years of research and interviews, Professor Torigian draws a vivid portrait of Xi’s life and the dramatic transformations of modern China.

The book explores Xi Zhongxun’s extraordinary loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party, even through suffering, persecution, and disagreement , a trait that, Torigian argues, has profoundly influenced his son, Xi Jinping.

📢 New Publication by Lars von Felten-Kury

In his latest article, “Wildlife Corridors. Animal Mobilities and Environmental Infrastructure in the Straits Settlements, c.1870s–1920s,” published in Environment and History, Lars von Felten-Kury examines the entanglements of imperial infrastructure, animal mobility, and ecological transformation in the maritime world of the Straits Settlements.

📘 Neue Publikation von Christa Tobler im Schweizerischen Jahrbuch für Europarecht 2024/2025

Christa Tobler analysiert in ihrem Beitrag «Mindestanforderungen an die Berufsqualifikationen im Freizügigkeitsabkommen am Beispiel der Pflegefachleute» die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen zur Anerkennung von Berufsqualifikationen zwischen der Schweiz und der EU. Der Artikel erschien im Schweizerischen Jahrbuch für Europarecht 2024/2025.

🗣 Christa Tobler zu Gast beim «Treffpunkt Bern: Bilaterale III»

Die Verhandlungen über das Abkommen zwischen der Schweiz und der Europäischen Union bleiben in der Schweizer Öffentlichkeit weiterhin präsent. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung «Treffpunkt Bern: Bilaterale III» diskutierte Christa Tobler gemeinsam mit weiteren Expert:innen, darunter Botschafter Patric Franzen, Chefunterhändler der Schweiz, über die Inhalte des neuen Vertragspakets und deren Bedeutung für die Schweiz. Die von der Schweizerischen Studienstiftung organisierte Veranstaltung fand am 8. Oktober 2025 in Bern statt.
