Turning precision engineering into breakthroughs in microfluidics

Yannick Pringalle holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from HEIA-FR (Fribourg) and completed an intensive CREO Parametric training program at Liebherr. He has developed a strong technical skill set in CAD (Autodesk Inventor, Siemens NX, CREO), FEA (Siemens NX) and CFD (Ansys CFX). His professional experience includes roles in quality control and fixture design at Integra LifeSciences, product assembly and quality control at MPS Micro Precision Systems AG, as well as work in electrical maintenance. He also participated in the Shell Eco-Marathon challenge, where he contributed to the design and manufacturing of a windscreen wiper system. As well as manufacturing body panels of the vehicle out of carbon fibre.

During his master, he designed and tested a nano-positioning linear stage in collaboration with MPS Micro Precision Systems AG using flexure elements. He is currently in Denmark conducting his Master’s thesis in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Alexander Kai Büll DTU Bioengineering, further strengthening his expertise through advanced research and hands-on experimental work. Combining precision engineering with space science

Jamie first trained as a micromechanics through an apprenticeship (CFC) at the Geneva School of Watchmaking, then went on to complete his bachelor’s degree in Microengineering at the University of Applied Sciences Geneva (HEPIA Genève). Alongside his studies, he has continued to develop his passion for ice hockey by remaining active on a competitive team.

“My motivation to start the Master of Precision Engineering at the University of Bern was the “Creative Engineering Lab” which is the perfect facility to use my hands on skills that I learned during my apprenticeship and my knowledge during my bachelor’s degree, to develop my ideas.”

From Bern to Singapore – Turning a dream into reality

Michael will do his Master thesis at the National University of Singapore in NUS Centre for Advanced Robotics (ARC) and Centre for Additive Manufacturing (AM.NUS), in the group of Prof. Yu Jun Tan.
Michaël did his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Fribourg with focus on plastics and lightweight mechanical structures. In his final semester, he developed an interest in constantly evolving advanced technologies.
His motivation to start the Master of Precision Engineering at the University of Bern was to deep dive in modern manufacturing methods and to learn more about innovative state of the art technologies.

The University of Bern’s MSc in Precision Engineering offers an environment where students can have hands-on experience with modern technologies.

Students of the Master in Precision Engineering had the opportunity to visit Alemnis AG, invited by their lecturer and Vice President of Business Development of Alemnis, Dr. Nicholas Randall.

The industry rounded off the lectures on Nano- and Microfabrication, giving students a unique change to see how theoretical concepts discussed in an academic setting are applied into cutting-edge industrial practice.

Founded as a spin-off from Empa, Alemnis is know for its high-precision instruments that enable material characterizations under extreme conditions with nanometer accuracy. Thank you for sharing your expertise with a new generation of engineers!

Scientific exchange at SBPE

On 18 November we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Alexander Lunt from the University of Bath, together with Nick Randall from Alemnis AG.

Dr Lunt gave an inspiring presentation on recent advances in micromechanical characterization of carbon-fiber based systems, demonstrating how synchrotron X-ray diffraction, digital volume correlation, and in-situ testing can reveal strain evolution and failure mechanisms in high-performance composites.
