The BA and MA Composition Creative Practice is mentored by a teaching team of composers, performers and stage directors: Franziska Baumann, Angela Bürger, Teresa Carrasco, Leo Dick, Irene Galindo Quero, Simon Steen-Andersen, Cathy Van Eck among others, supported by a dedicated technical team in the context of our multidisciplinary University, with departments of Sound Arts, Performance, Literature, or Theatre, with whom we collaborate closely.

We look forward to accompanying future students in their development as composers/performer-composers and seeing new professional collaborations and intensive musical, cultural. and personal exchange grow day by day.

In our HKB Composition / Creative Practice study program (BA & MA) we support you in developing your artistic skills in composing, multimedia, music staging, performing, improvising, théâtre musical, audio and video programming, or inter- and transdisciplinary creation.
We encourage you to follow your own artistic path which may cover composition, interpretation, performance as well as a composer-performer profile.
Our team including performers, composers, and stage directors is here to support students' personal developments with an individual and flexible curriculum. Our students are creating their own curriculum by their choice of courses and mentors (including Simon Steen-Andersen, Franziska Baumann, Angela Bürger, Teresa Carrasco, Xavier Dayer, Leo Dick, Cathy Van Eck, Gilbert Nouno, Peter Kraut, and others).
In 2023 our invited composers included Matthew Shlomowitz, Pierre Jodlowski, and Trond Reinholdtsen.
By providing our students with an electronic studio, a black-box stage with lighting/audio/video equipment and necessary technical support we are enabling them to carry out their own musical projects.
Our students include graduates who are discovering the world of creative practices as well as established composers who seek an enlargement of their professional networks. We are proud of this community of people from all over the world that provides for intensive musical, cultural and personal exchange.

Xavier Dayer, the head of our MA HKB Composition / Creative Practice is now set to become the new Director of the Department of Music at ZHdK Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. His official start date is August 1, 2024. This transition comes after over two decades of invaluable contributions at the HKB for which we are immensely grateful!

Der Fachhochschulrat hat Xavier Dayer zum neuen Direktor des Departements Musik der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ernannt. Er tritt seine neue Position am 1. August 2024 an.
