Round Square IDEALS - #6 Service
Written by Larissa, and Zuzanna

One of the Round Square Ideals is service, which is also incorporated into Aiglon’s guiding principles. The school focuses on service from both a global and local perspective. Involvement in the local community ranges from the Elderly Lunch, to the Pre-Fleuri Childcare Service, and even the Annual Ski Pistes Clean-Up. The numerous projects to various countries are opportunities that any student can participate in, visiting places like Thailand, Rwanda or Peru. These projects aim to teach Aiglonians how to be of service to others, on a global scale. The Round Square Emergency Fund is used to respond to global crises. The recent earthquakes in Nepal received the money from this year’s fund. Not only was the money recently sent, but also, the entire school came together, collecting over 12 liters worth of clothes, which have also been donated to Nepal! Service is a key component to Aiglon life, and students are often only too happy to contribute however they can.

Round Square IDEALS - #5 Leadership
Written by Celeste, Andrey, and Masha K.

Leadership is a key ideal of the Round Square, with each Round Square displaying different variations of student leadership. Leadership is critical to not only to life at Aiglon but in the wider world. Leadership, as we define it, is helping those who follow you to accomplish common goals. We believe that a good leader should be experienced, but most importantly willing to learn and listen to others. Nowadays, exemplary leaders can be quite rare, making it crucial for Aiglon to mold its students into tomorrow’s leaders. Student leadership opportunities are abundant at Aiglon, from being a member of the student council, to being the leader of an after-school activity, a leader among your classmates, and in U6 a School Prefect or Guardian. Leadership is an integral part of Aiglon.

Round Square IDEALS - #4 Adventure
Written by Aly, Jack, and Hugo

At Aiglon College, there are many challenging and exciting adventures to be had. Our Expeditions Department sends us out, into the mountains, most weekends, to camp, cycle, ski, kayak and mountain bike. Through these expeditions, we explore our beautiful surroundings, while bonding with our peers. Aiglon also provides us students with the opportunity to improve themselves through the completions of challenging awards. The Duke of Edinburgh Awards, an internationally acclaimed youth self-improvement scheme is one example, but closer to home, Aiglon offers Bouquetins to students who complete five expeditions or more. Twice a year, Aiglon sets a "challenge" to all its students: to complete a 10-kilometer course up the mountain. This challenge brings the school together, whether walking or running, and at the finish line, everyone knows the satisfaction of having gone beyond their personal limits.

Round Square IDEALS - #3 Environmentalism
Written by Charlie, and Alexander D.

Environmentalism is one of the key pillars of the Round Square’s philosophy. With many environmental issues set to affect humanity in the next 50 years, Aiglon College takes many steps to ensure our impact on the environment is minimal. The entire school is engaged in a thorough and highly effective recycling program, which serves not only to minimize our carbon footprint, but also assists the local community in waste disposal. Additionally, decreasing the amount of food waste is one of the school’s primary goals. Students at Aiglon are taught that a healthy relationship between human beings and the planet is beneficial for all, and crucial in safeguarding our planet for the generations to come. Erasmus presentations about climate change, and school wide discussions on the impact of food waste are some examples of forums where environmental issues are discussed.

Round Square IDEALS - #2 Democracy
Written by John, Phillip, Ali S.

Teaching students both the value of democracy and the importance of active participation in democracy is essential to Aiglon College. Freedom of thought and speech is greatly encouraged and appropriate forums and channels of communication are set in place such as the student government. There are several after-school activities where students can congregate to discuss topics. Students are taught to appreciate self-discipline, and are expected to contribute to the running of the school. Within the houses, during times of conflict, the older forms are often responsible for settling issues. We are taught how to handle conflict in a mature and respectful manner. Decisions within the school are often passed to the students in the form of surveys giving each student a voice.

Round Square IDEALS - #1 Internationalism
Written by Najeeba, Darina, and Alexander G.

Aiglon promotes internationalism in many different ways. We have students from over 60 different nationalities. Diversity is one of our guiding principles. That is clear when waling down a hallway, you can hear over five different languages, often from the same students. Internationalism is brought to Aiglon through events such as International Day, which takes place in the Summer Term. Through these, the diversity in our school is celebrated as different cultures are brought together for a day. The beauty of Aiglon is the seamless mixing of cultures, with students often borrowing practices, expressions, or habits from friends with an entirely different heritage, thus allowing us to find the similarities within our differences. The world does seem smaller when you not only know a little about most places, but also someone from most places. Through Aiglon, students learn to find their international identities.

Recently, a devastating magnitude 7.9 earthquake, and many equally potent aftershocks, have struck the impoverished nation of Nepal. In the wake of this unprecedented natural disaster, the Aiglon Round Square Committee have decided to donate CHF 1000.- to assist the beleaguered and suffering people of Nepal. We will be sending these funds directly to aid workers on the ground, through an Aiglon alumna, Rebecca Greenway ’03. She will be giving the funds to her colleagues at an organization called “Himalayan Voluntourism”, a “social enterprise dedicated to the socio-economic development of rural Nepal through the spirit of volunteerism”. This is their website if you would like to learn more:
