LMSC - EPFL Laboratory of Semiconductor Materials. Synthesis and characterization of semiconductor nanowires

Our research activities are centered on the investigations of novel semiconductor nanostructure combinations, using mainly nanowires, which are filamentary crystals with a very high ratio of length to diameter, the latter being in the nanometer range. Semiconductor nanowires are of significant interest from a fundamental point of view as they exhibit new physical and chemical properties owing to t

heir large surface-to-volume ratio, low dimensionality and confinement in one dimension. From a technological perspective, they constitute attractive building blocks for the assembly of novel nano-electronic and nano-photonic systems, as well as biochemical sensor. Our synthesis methods span from the standard Chemical Vapor Deposition to catalyst-free Molecular Beam Epitaxy. Examples of our experimental methods are to study the fundamental properties that span from optical and Raman spectroscopy to magnetotransport. We intensively collaborate with the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, CSIC for detailed structural characterization by Transmission Electron Microscopy methods.

A majority of our group was in Chamonix for the NWW 2022. There were great talks and poster presentations, including ours :)
Already looking forward to the next one!

Last week, we had visitors from the Polman Group at AMOLF. We spent the whole day having scientific discussions, visiting labs, and exchanging ideas. Then we had a classic Swiss dinner eating raclette in refuge du Laviau. What a nice day!

In the past month, we said goodbye to two of our LMSC members, Anna and Lucas. They successfully defended their thesis, and we had great celebrations after their public defenses.
Congratulations Dr. Anna Kukulova and Dr. Lucas Guniat. We will miss you!

Congratulations Valerio Piazza for the 2020 Piaget Scientific Award!
The Piaget Scientific Award, sponsored by Piaget, is a prestigious award given out by EPFL every year to promote groundbreaking research in the broader field of miniaturization and microengineering. To know more about his work, please check out this link:

Valerio Piazza is creating new 3D architectures built from an inventive form of nanowire. His research aims to push the boundaries of miniaturization and pave the way to more powerful electronic devices. He has just won the 2020 Piaget Scientific Award, whose prize money will fund his work at EPFL f...

Hello September!
We started the month having the first part of the retreat in Bois-Genoud. We had a full day of discussions and delicious gourmet food. Then, we had the second part of the retreat, well-being, in Parc du Pelican. Thanks to Carolyn Brown, we learned how to avoid lower back pain, which is followed by lunch nearby the lake.
Hope September is treating you well :)

Glad to announce our new publication on FeGex👇

Thanks to its B20 cubic phase, this material platform can host skyrmions around room temperature, making them a potential candidate for logic or data storage devices.
Congratulations to Anna, Mira, and all authors!

There is currently an emerging drive to computational materials design and fabrication of the predicted novel materials. One of the keys for developing appropriate fabrication methods is determination of the composition and phase. Here we explore the FeGe system and establish reference Raman signatu...

We are happy to share our new publication on Co-Zn-Mg thin films grown by vdW epitaxy on graphene. These materials are known to host topologically protected skyrmions at room temperature. By tuning the growth conditions, we engineered their structural properties. For further information please check out this link👇

Topologically protected magnetic skyrmions have raised interest for future spintronics applications. One of the main challenges is the synthesis of room temperature skyrmion-hosting materials that are compatible with thin-film technology. We present an approach to produce strain-free epitaxial thin....
