Are we alone in the universe? This timeless question took centre stage and drew a remarkable crowd at a recent Global Lecture at ETH Zürich. The ETH Zurich Audimax was packed with an engaged audience, and the conversation continued long after the event ended as the audience stayed on to ask questions and exchange ideas.

In an inspiring conversation, S. Pete Worden, Executive Director of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, and Sascha P. Quanz, who leads the visionary LIFE Space Mission, explored the latest advances in the search for life beyond Earth.

From ambitious interstellar probes to new methods of detecting the heat signatures of distant worlds, the discussion revealed how rapidly the frontier of discovery is expanding. What might happen if we detect signs of life beyond Earth? And what would it mean if we don’t?

In our latest ETH Ambassadors Blog, six PhD students and postdocs from ETH Zurich share how the Global Young Scientists Summit in Singapore became a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

From presenting their own research in Quickfire Pitches to spontaneous conversations with Nobel, Turing and Millennium Prize laureates, the week was filled with bold ideas, honest reflections and unforgettable encounters. What surprised them most was the openness of the laureates, the shared doubts and passions, and the realization that breakthroughs grow out of persistent curiosity and the courage to keep going.

We are delighted to invite you to a very special edition of the ETH Global Lecture Series. On 31 March 2026, our esteemed colleague and regular moderator of the Series Chris Luebkeman will take the stage for his final Global Lecture before retiring.

This lecture on the topic of “Choices”, brings Chris together with Aaron Maniam (University of Oxford) for a thoughtful exploration of how the decisions we make individually and collectively shape our future. From daily habits to long range planning, they will reflect on how foresight can empower us to act with clarity, agency and responsibility in a rapidly changing world.

Chris has inspired our institution to think boldly, listen deeply, and imagine courageously. This event is both a celebration of his impact and an invitation to continue the work he has championed: embracing the power of choice in shaping a better future.
