Football is the most popular sport in the world – and a business that generates billions in revenue. ⚽💰 Nevertheless, the finances of many clubs are in a state of turmoil and operating far above their budgets. Following this, UEFA decided to introduce the so-called «Financial Fair Play». A measure to prevent clubs from going bankrupt one after the other.

Prof. Egon Franck is a member of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body. In the current Oec. Magazine he gives insight into UEFA's financial regulation and sheds light on one of its biggest misconceptions.

Our alumna Tamara Giger worked in retail for many years before setting up her own interior design agency. In an interview in the Oec. Magazine, she reveals why she has stopped making five-year plans.

Her advice to current students: «Go on a search for yourself: Who do I want to be? What am I interested in? What is important to me? These are the hardest questions to ask yourself. And always question, even if a professor, a parent or a supervisor says: that's how it is. There are many ways, many answers and solutions. No one way is right or wrong.»

Tamara Giger
Managing Director Etc-Brands and Founder of Pink Lemonade

How does one become a data analyst and what exactly does this job entail? Our alumnus Pascal Engeli gives insight into his day-to-day work as Data Analyst Sport at Swiss Radio and Television SRF.

«There is no general answer to the question of what exactly a data analyst does. No one in my field does the same as his or her colleagues. Basically, we enable the simple and automated retrieval of data from various interfaces, prepare data and use it for analyses or build models. The added value of the work lies in having the data at the right time to use it for decisions or for strategic projects.

The appeal of data analysis for me is to satisfy the thirst for knowledge. Most of the time, you approach a data set with concrete questions or hypotheses. However, other questions then develop from the analysis, the original questions lose relevance, or the opportunity arises to add more data and derive additional insights.»

Our alumna Franziska Märki spent the last 5 weeks in Qatar at the FIFA World Cup. She is a project coordinator for major sports events at SRG SSR and provides insight into the huge logistical effort of TV and radio broadcasts of sporting events.

To the question what her day-to-day schedule looks like during a major event, she answers: «I am on site where the event takes place. The daily routine is different at a major football event (UEFA EURO 2020), Olympic Games or World Ski Championships. In general, we are the point of contact when questions arise on site about logistics and employees need information. For soccer events, we are often in the stadium the day before and on the day of the game to provide support for the SRG production teams. At a World Ski Championships, we are present at the ‹International Broadcast Center› (the center for television and radio broadcasters worldwide), from where we support the employees.»

Three students of our Faculty received the newly established Excellence Scholarships. The aim of this scholarship is to support students who have achieved excellent results in their studies and have the potential to make a substantial contribution to solving socially relevant problems in the future.

Banking and Finance student Joel Beltrami is one of the scholarship recipients. During his studies he worked at a Swiss media company, where he assisted the management with a strategic project that was carried out in coordination with the four major Swiss media companies. «Within this framework, I was responsible for preparing industry, market and competitor analyses as well as deriving and evaluating various options for action and the associated risks.» He is convinced that this project will have an important influence on the future media landscape in Switzerland.

We congratulate all scholarship holders and wish them every success in their Master's studies.
