Collegium Helveticum

Collegium Helveticum The Collegium Helveticum is the joint Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) of the ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, and the Zurich University of the Arts.

We aim to provide a meeting place and forum for dialogue between the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, engineering, medical science and the arts. In addition to our fellows’ research activities, we run events to foster the interaction of science and the arts with the fields of economy, culture, society and environment. The Collegium also provides a platform for the realization of tra

nsdisciplinary projects and to think about their conditions and methods, often in partnership with other institutions and initiatives.

Fluid interfaces are more than just a scientific phenomenon—they are a canvas for artistic expression and a key to understanding complex physical interactions.

This conference brings together experts from physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering to push the boundaries of liquid behavior research.

What makes this event special? It seamlessly blends scientific with artistic innovation, creating a space where interdisciplinary dialogue flourishes. From cutting-edge research presentations to stunning artistic interpretations, this conference changes how we perceive and study fluid dynamics.

With a live performance by artist Kamil Czapiga / , featuring real-time microscopy visuals enhanced by original soundtracks that deepen the sensory experience.

Join us in this stimulating exchange of ideas and creativity!

This exhibition features two innovative works that explore the artistic and scientific possibilities of liquid interfaces: 𝘊𝘰𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘮–𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘣𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘥 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 by and 𝘓𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘍𝘢𝘣–𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘓𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘞𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 by Technion researchers. Together, these works challenge our understanding of materiality, structure, and the interplay between science and art, offering a fascinating glimpse into the creative potential of liquid interfaces.

✨ LiquiFab – Crafting with Liquids in Weightlessness by Technion researchers
🔹 An artistic extension of research into fabricating optical and architectural structures in space
🔹 Showcases fluid-formed elements created in a zero-gravity simulation
🔹 Features video footage from experiments aboard the International Space Station

🎥 Cosmodernism – The Abstract Beauty of Liquid Interfaces by Kamil Czapiga
🔹 A mesmerizing video installation blending science and art
🔹 Uses liquids, chemicals, and micro film sets to create otherworldly visuals
🔹 Bridges the micro and macro through stunning abstract imagery

Together, these works challenge our understanding of materiality, structure, and the interplay between science and art. Join us for an immersive experience where physics meets creativity!

The Collegium Welcomes Mario Wimmer as the New Head of Academic Program.

Mario has the exciting task of creating a thriving intellectual atmosphere in the Zurich Sternwarte and initiate conversation between the sciences, arts and humanities. As a historian of sciene and scholarship, he engaged with the question of what drives and facilitates intellectual work. After two years as ETH fellow, 2010-12, he taught at UC Berkeley's rhetoric department before he returned to Switzerland. From 2017-2022, he taught Media Studies at University of Basel and helped run the research group "Media of Exactitude." We are very delighted to have Mario and his expertise at the Semper Observatory. Welcome!

Mario takes over from Christian Ritter, who has been at the Collegium Helveticum since 2016, most recently as Deputy Director and Director ad interim. Christian has been appointed by the Lucerne School of Art and Design as Vice Dean and new Head of Interdisciplinarity & Transformation.
Thanks to Christian, the research area “Art, Media, and Design,” which was launched in 2016, has been successfully established and became a cornerstone of the Collegium's interdisciplinary program. Christian was a driving force behind several of the Collegium’s collaboration and outreach projects, such as the remarkable exhibition “Privatsphäre – geschützt, geteilt, verkauft.” Thank you Christian for your valuable work and commitment to the Collegium. We wish you only the best in your new job.
