Last week, the Executive MBA students at the University of Zurich took a deep dive into Change Management with Prof. Dr. David Seidl.

Organizational change is rarely straightforward, and many transformation initiatives fall short of their objectives. As Reshma Ramachandran, seasoned board member and Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer at Smith Detection pointed out “70% of change initiatives fail. For leaders, understanding how change can be thoughtfully designed, coordinated, and implemented is therefore an essential capability.”

Throughout the module, participants examined the complexities of organizational change and explored the key levers that can help turn transformation into lasting impact. A particular focus was on connecting conceptual insights with real-world experiences.
One of the highlights was a visit to the University Children’s Hospital Zurich (KiSpi), which recently underwent a major transformation with its relocation to a new hospital building. Luisa Zetting, Head of Business Development at KiSpi, shared her experiences of managing this complex transition and discussed some of the challenges and lessons learned with the participants.

Finally, Angela Vils, Senior Manager at PwC | People & Organisation Consulting, explored another particularly challenging dimension of transformation: organizational culture. Drawing on several empirical cases, she discussed both the possibilities and the limitations of deliberately managing culture change.
A highly insightful module combining academic perspectives with hands-on experiences from leaders navigating transformation in practice.

Two EMBA cohorts. One Leadership Journey.

Over the past few weeks, both the English- and German-speaking cohorts of the Executive MBA University of Zurich have embarked on their Leadership Journey.
While the two cohorts bring together different backgrounds, industries, experiences and perspectives, they share the same starting point: taking a step back to reflect on what it means to lead — and what kind of leader they want to become.

Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Jochen Menges, the first leadership modules explored four fundamental questions:
- Why do I lead?
- What future do I want to create?
- How will I make it happen?
- Who will help me get there?

As our guest speaker Shipra Singh from Microsoft put it:
“For me, purpose is what converts potential into meaningful transformation. Within each of us lies a sea of untapped potential. Having a clear ‘why’ provides the compass that helps us navigate towards possibilities we may never have imagined for ourselves.”

The EMBA UZH Leadership Journey is about bringing experienced professionals together to reflect, challenge assumptions, learn from each other and turn insight into action.

Participant Sarah Boulter, Enterprise Support Manager at Amazon Web Services (AWS), captured another essential part of the EMBA experience:
“I was delighted to start this journey with a group of diverse individuals from over 20 countries, with experience at different levels of leadership and in various industries. I am looking forward to learning not only from our excellent professors, but also from my cohort and sharing my knowledge while we embark on this journey together.”

And this is only the beginning. This week the cohorts will come together for two joint modules and some exciting activites to get to know each other and learn together.

Two cohorts. Different perspectives. One shared journey towards leading in a world of constant transformation.

AI, supercomputers and robotics — EMBA UZH on the road in Lugano!
This week, our Executive MBA participants explored Switzerland’s AI and supercomputing and robotics ecosystems across CSCS – Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, IDSIA USI-SUPSI and DTI-SUPSI, before discussing real-world AI adoption in Swiss industry.

A big thank you to all our hosts and speakers: Angelo Mangili (CSCS), Prof. Andrea Emilio Rizzoli (IDSIA), Prof. Anna Valente (SUPSI), Luca Maria Gambardella (Artificialy & USI), Claudio Hintermann (Abacus Research), Marco Sciarini (Edilstrada) Rudi Belotti (Canton Ticino) and to Luca Pedrotti (UBS Ticino) for hosting the group and a wonderful Apero.

A Warm Welcome to the EMBA UZH Class of 2026–28!

This week the English language Executive MBA UZH with Focus on Digital Transformation cohort 26-28 has now also officially begun its journey!

This year’s class reflects the true spirit of global exchange and professional excellence that we celebrate at the University of Zurich: 21 different nationalities, 36% female representation, an average age of 41, 16 years of average professional experience and 15 industries represented.

The program launch was marked by a welcome from Prof. Dr. Reto Eberle, President of the Executive Committee and an address by Thorsten Klein, Program Director of the EMBA UZH, who set the tone for an engaging and transformative EMBA journey.

To kick things off, participants then took part in dynamic outdoor activities led by Marius Boesch and his expert team. These exercises challenged the group to solve problems collaboratively and demonstrated the power of teamwork, creativity, and leadership in action.

Now the award winning EMBA UZH Leadership Journey is well underway, starting with valuable insights and experiments on leadership from Prof. Dr. Jochen Menges and his team Leon Bach from the Centre for Leadership in the Future of Work.

With such diverse professional and cultural backgrounds, this class promises enriching discussions, shared learning, and lasting connections.

Der EMBA UZH ist gestartet!

Am Mittwoch ist der neue Jahrgang des deutschsprachigen Executive MBA der Universität Zürich offiziell gestartet. Wir freuen uns, eine diverse Gruppe von Führungskräften begrüssen zu dürfen, die Erfahrungen aus unterschiedlichsten Branchen und Funktionen mitbringt. Besonders erfreulich: Der Anteil von weiblichen Führungskräften liegt bei 41 % und unterstreicht die Diversität dieses Jahrgangs.

Den Auftakt gestalteten Prof. Dr. Reto Eberle, Präsident des Leitenden Ausschusses und Dozent im EMBA, sowie Dr. Matthias Schaub Schaub, Programmdirektor des EMBA.

Danach ging es direkt in die Praxis: Bei spannenden Outdoor-Challenges mit Marius Boesch und seinem Team standen Teamgeist, Kreativität und gemeinsames Lernen im Mittelpunkt.
