Proyecto Concepcion

Proyecto Concepcion Multidisciplinary project of Delft University of Technology (NL), faculty of Civil Engineering, in cooperation with the University of Concepción (CL).

Proyecto Concepción is a group of five students from Delft University of Technology, following a MSc degree in Civil Engineering. In November 2017, the group will go to Concepción (Chile) to work on a multidisciplinary project related to tsunami- and earthquake engineering. The location of our project is called Caleta Quidico or simply Quidico Bay. In this bay a great number of local fishermen are

active, who were affected by the tsunami of February 2010. To restore and improve the productive capacities of the fishermen, the Chilean Department of Ports initiated a redevelopment plan to improve their operating conditions. Our goal is to explore and evaluate several design alternatives for the bay and finally make a preliminary design of the solution determined to be optimum. The designs will include a jetty and breakwater to ensure operation and anchorage of the fishing boats. In addition, an onshore building will be designed to facilitate the work of the fishermen. The design of all the elements will be carried out taking into account the extreme impact of large-scale earthquake and tsunami events.

Last Friday we had a productive meeting with the Minesterio de Obras Públicas (Chilean Ministry of Public Works)! They provide us with technical data, Chilean building codes, guidance and support for the project. With this data we are currently formulating a thorough project description and problem analysis.

Today's planning: visit the project site, Quidico Bay! Pictures follow soon!

After introducing all the group members, it is now almost time to take the plane to Chili. Coming Sunday, the big journey will begin! We will arrive in Chile on Monday morning and then the project will start…

New collaboration:
We are glad to announce that BAM International has agreed to be the leading partner for our project. In this collaboration we have agreed to promote the company in the best possible way in the Netherlands and in Chile. Since we will be working together with the Department of Ports in Chile, this is the perfect opportunity to inform them about the work BAM International is capable of. The market in South America is a tough one for European companies to get a foothold in, thus improving the brand recognition in Chili can help BAM to inquire future projects in that area.
Last week we had a meeting at their head office in The Hague. We are very pleased that they made some time for a nice meeting to discuss about our project. BAM has a lot of experience in fishing ports around the world. Hopefully we can help each other to make our project to a success!

Meeting with Witteveen+Bos:
A few weeks ago, we visited the office of Witteveen+Bos in Rotterdam. We had a meeting with a Coastal Engineering specialist and an Earthquake specialist. During the meeting we discussed all kinds of potential problems we are going to face with during our project. Their experience helped us a lot about how to start with a project like this. Some useful tools and suggestions were given to work efficiently in Chile. If we encounter some other problems we can, hopefully, contact them again! We would like to thank Witteveen+Bos for their collaboration with us.

For those who did not know it yet: every 2/3 weeks we are sending updates by email with some nice pictures. If you would like to receive those updates, please send an email to: [email protected]

La próxima actualización es de Chile!

Last but not least, we would like to introduce the fifth team member of Proyecto Concepcion to you: Wouter Sonnema

This hard working student is the only real ‘Delftenaar’ of the team, since he really grew up in the beautiful city of Delft. Wouter is a real sportsman as he does not only play football at FC Even Wisselen, but he also likes to sail a lot. He has been sailing his whole life on a high level, won many great prices and traveled to places all around the world for this beautiful sport. For a large part of his student life he also was a member of Team Delft Challenge, a student sailing team with whom he participated multiple times in Sailing Tour Arabia.

Due to sailing, studying abroad and traveling, Wouter has seen a lot of the world already, but he has never been to South-America before. Therefore he is really excited to go to Chile and is especially looking forward to all the trips he is going to make. After completing the project he will travel through beautiful Colombia and he is also really enthusiastic about the week-long trek through Patagonia, that we are going to make with the team.

After completing his Civil Engineering Bachelor, Wouter took a gap-year to get some work experience at two well-known engineering companies: Heerema Marine Contractors and Witteveen+Bos. After this valuable experience, he started his Master Double Degree in Structural- and Geo-engineering. His special interests are soil structure interaction, structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. During the project in Chile he will mainly focus on the Geo-engineering aspects, but if Falko and Ronald need some help, he also can support them with the structural problems.

Long story short, Wouter is a real asset to the team as he is a hardworking, proactive and versatile student that keeps the rest of the group focused and has a lot of experience. But more important he brings a great vibe to the team since he likes to make jokes, enjoys a good night out to show his smooth dance moves and likes travelling!
