A 12-meter-long scroll, The Gusu Prosperity Map, returned to Suzhou for the first time in 20 years! 🖼️

Painted by Xu Yang during the Qing dynasty, this remarkable work brings 18th-century Suzhou to life, from its winding canals and bridges to its bustling streets and markets.

For DKU students, the visit was a chance to explore Suzhou's history and culture through the details of a single painting. They also tried their hand at traditional Chinese painting at Suzhou Museum West. 🎨✍️

Will AI make myths obsolete, or inspire new ones? 💭

DKU assistant professor Van Overmeire and Global Cultural Studies student Ruixiang Hu tackled that question in an essay that won a Grand Prize in the English-language category of the inaugural Fangtang Global AI-Human Collaboration Essay Competition.

In “The Hat Has Changed, but the People Haven’t: The Persistence of Mythology in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” they argue that AI isn’t making myths disappear. It is changing the forms they take and giving rise to new ones.

Congratulations to Ben and Ruixiang!

Bikalpa Panthi (Bikki), a DKU senior, recently visited Duke University to take part in the Global Summit of the Future Universities Alliance, which brought together education leaders from 49 institutions across 23 countries.

As the only student participant, Bikki brought a student perspective to the summit and advocated for including students in conversations about the future of higher education. Amid changes driven by AI, he encouraged students to help shape not only their own futures but also the future of generations to come.

What does it mean when a former student nominates you for a global teaching award?🏆

Congratulations to Zairong Xiang, associate professor of comparative literature and director of arts, on being named one of 12 educators worldwide to receive the inaugural McCall MacBain Leading Educators Award! 🎉

Nominated by DKU alumna Eldar Wang ’23, a McCall MacBain Scholar, Professor Xiang was honored for his impact on students through teaching and mentorship. From encouraging students to explore new academic directions to creating opportunities beyond the classroom, he has helped students think critically, pursue their interests, and forge their own paths.

From Kunshan to Duke-wide conversations. 🌏

Zach Fredman, dean of faculty affairs at DKU, has joined a Duke faculty committee as part of the Provost’s Initiative on the Arts and Humanities.

The year-long initiative is exploring how the arts and humanities connect across Duke, from curriculum and research to student experiences. Zach will bring perspectives from DKU as the committee develops a broader vision for the arts and humanities.

Through DKU’s Medical English Program, students help local doctors strengthen their medical English, communicate with patients and take part in international academic exchange. But once the students step into the hospital, the roles begin to shift: doctors bring them into real clinical settings and give them a closer look at medical practice in China.

Launched in 2019, the program brings DKU students and local medical professionals together to learn from one another through language learning and clinical experience.
