As part of our new series, we’ll introduce our faculty members and share their research, achievements, and stories. This episode features Professor Dou Linming, an expert in mining engineering, mine safety, and rock burst prevention.

His research has contributed to the development of remote monitoring and early-warning technologies for mining-induced seismicity and rock bursts, helping make mining safer and more efficient.

This summer, the “Mining Pioneers” practice team from CUMT brought more than 150 students to mining sites across Xinjiang, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong. Through field visits and hands-on practice, students explored smart mining, green development, and ecological restoration, while seeing how new technologies are being applied to modern mining.

They also met veteran miners and learned about the dedication and spirit passed down through generations. A summer of real-world experience, new ideas, and a closer look at the future of mining.

Hands-on learning at the Smart Mine Industrial-scale Teaching Center!
238 Mining Engineering undergraduates took part in field practice, getting hands-on experience through site surveys, equipment maintenance, practical demonstrations, and safety training.
The training platform received a 100% satisfaction rate, with 90% of students giving positive feedback on the teaching quality and learning environment. In September, 17 international students will also join the program.

Another update from the School of Mines!
The 2026 National Natural Science Foundation of China project results are in. The School secured 29 projects with total funding of 11.8 million yuan, ranking first for the third consecutive year.

The result reflects the steady development of research at the School of Mines. More research, more ideas, and more work ahead as we continue to explore new possibilities in mining science and technology.

On September 7, the School of Mines welcomed its 2026 cohort at the Mingde Auditorium, with 445 graduate students and 344 undergraduates starting their university journey. Xuanyi reported on the welcome ceremony and the memorable moments from the event.
From Dean Huang Yanli’s first lecture and messages from faculty and students to the appointment of class advisors, the screening of Great Mining, and the CUMT anthem, the ceremony marked a meaningful start for the Class of 2026.

The 25th National Minggao Forum on Scientific Mining was held at the China University of Mining and Technology from July 18–20, 2026. Named in honor of Academician Qian Minggao, the forum brought together more than 300 experts, scholars, and academicians to discuss the future of mining and energy development.

With more than 80 academic reports covering green and intelligent mining, near-zero-carbon coal power, and deep-earth resource extraction, the forum highlighted new ideas and technologies shaping the future of the industry.
