**PHAETHON Centre of Excellence (CoE)**

PHAETHON CoE is being established through the eponymous Teaming for Excellence Horizon Europe project, representing the evolution and upgrade of the University of Cyprus FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy, towards a world-class autonomous Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence (CoE). The Centre aims to serve as a catalyst for excellence in the energy field, focusing on the development of solutions and applications that can address a wide range of contemporary global energy challenges. Driven by the timely energy transition and prevailing climate change challenges, the Research and Innovation (R&I) focus of PHAETHON CoE is on intelligent, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions, aligned to the European Green Deal priorities. This remit places PAHETHON CoE at the heart of the energy ecosystem in Cyprus, the surrounding region, and worldwide, to ensure a more sustainable and secure energy future.

**Research focus on themes with key growth potential**

The PHAETHON CoE research themes include:

o renewable energy sources and grid integration,
o storage and e-mobility,
o smart grids and intelligent energy,
o green hydrogen,
o energy socioeconomics, multi-level governance and environmental sustainability. Moreover, the Centre’s research focus represents a key area of significant growth potential and high priority for:

o Cyprus -- the green and digital energy transition are completely aligned with the Smart Specialisation Strategy of Cyprus. o the European Union -- addressing the EU Climate Action, European Green Deal, and REPowerEU initiatives.

**About Project PHAETHON**

The PHAETHON Teaming Project was submitted and awarded funding under the prestigious Horizon Europe “Teaming for Excellence” Call for Proposals. Along with the University of Cyprus (UCY), the other partners in the consortium are the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Cyprus Seeds, the Technical University of Denmark, and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. The project’s main outcome is to upgrade the highly successful UCY FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy to an autonomous and self-sustaining Centre of Excellence in the energy field. It also serves as an academic and professional conduit between three countries (Cyprus, Denmark, and The Netherlands), jointly tackling the challenges and working towards facilitating the much-needed green transition.

Έναν χρόνο μετά την έναρξη λειτουργίας της ανταγωνιστικής αγοράς ηλεκτρισμού στην Κύπρο, πώς έχει εξελιχθεί και τι αποκαλύπτουν τα δεδομένα για τις τιμές ηλεκτρισμού, τη συμμετοχή των ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας, καθώς και τις προοπτικές και τις προκλήσεις της;

Το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΦΑΕΘΩΝ του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, σε συνεργασία με τον Διαχειριστή Συστήματος Μεταφοράς Κύπρου (ΔΣΜΚ), σας προσκαλεί σε εκδήλωση που αποτιμά τον πρώτο χρόνο λειτουργίας της ανταγωνιστικής αγοράς ηλεκτρισμού και παρουσιάζει νέα εργαλεία για την πρόσβαση, την ανάλυση και την πρόβλεψη των τιμών της αγοράς.

🆕 Κεντρικό σημείο της εκδήλωσης θα είναι η έναρξη λειτουργίας της δημόσιας πλατφόρμας δεδομένων της αγοράς ηλεκτρισμού του Κέντρου Αριστείας ΦΑΕΘΩΝ, η οποία θα παρέχει ελεύθερη πρόσβαση σε δεδομένα της αγοράς, ενισχύοντας τη διαφάνεια και την τεκμηριωμένη ανάλυση.

Το πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει:

🔹 Αποτίμηση του πρώτου έτους λειτουργίας της αγοράς από τον Διαχειριστή Αγοράς Ηλεκτρισμού του ΔΣΜΚ και την ερευνητική ομάδα του ΦΑΕΘΩΝ.

🔹 Παρουσίαση βασικών ευρημάτων για τις τιμές, τις ποσότητες, τον ρόλο των ΑΠΕ στη διαμόρφωση των τιμών και τη θέση της Κύπρου στο ευρωπαϊκό πλαίσιο.

🔹 Ζωντανή επίδειξη της νέας δημόσιας πλατφόρμας δεδομένων, καθώς και παρουσίαση εργαλείων ανάλυσης της αγοράς και πρόβλεψης τιμών.

🔹 Ανοικτή συζήτηση με το κοινό και δυνατότητα δοκιμής της πλατφόρμας από τους συμμετέχοντες.

The PHAETHON Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the University of Cyprus invites applications for a fully funded PhD position / Early-Stage Researcher (R1), focusing on short-term electricity price forecasting using advanced machine-learning methods and economic analysis.

🔬 Research Focus
Explore how AI can improve electricity price forecasting, taking into account renewable energy integration, price volatility, extreme price events and negative prices. The research will also assess the economic value of improved forecasts for market participants, consumers and system operators.

💼 What We Offer
🔸 Gross annual financial support of €18,000–€30,000, including the 13th salary

🔬🧑‍🔬 EURAXESS – Researchers in Motion supports researcher mobility and career development across Europe and beyond, providing free information and guidance to researchers and their families on the practical and administrative aspects of working and living in another country.

As part of the EURAXESS Cyprus Network, PHAETHON CoE will build on its experience and strengthen its support for researchers, particularly those arriving from abroad. This includes providing guidance on recruitment opportunities, visa and work permit procedures, relocation, social protection systems and family-related matters, helping researchers navigate the practical aspects of establishing themselves in Cyprus.
