🎉 EDU-MENT Comes to a Successful Close! 🇪🇺

How can we better prepare nurses and care professionals to support the mental health and psychosocial well-being of older adults?

This was the central challenge addressed by EDU-MENT – Education in Mental Health for Nurses in Home and Residential Care, an Erasmus+ project that has now reached its conclusion after three years of collaboration.

🧠 From learning to practice

EDU-MENT worked to strengthen the knowledge and skills of care professionals in addressing mental health and psychosocial challenges in care settings. To support this goal, the project developed a blended-learning programme and digital learning tools, which were piloted in real care environments in Cyprus, Austria, and Slovenia.

🌍 Turning European collaboration into practical learning opportunities

Through the collaboration of the University of Cyprus, UMIT Tirol, Häfelekar Unternehmens Beratung Schober GmbH, AGECARE, and the University of Maribor, EDU-MENT brought together expertise in education, technology, and care to address an important societal need.

At UCY’s Software Engineering and Internet Technologies (SEIT) Lab, we are proud to have contributed to this initiative, working alongside our partners to support more accessible and practice-oriented learning for care professionals.

👏 A sincere thank-you to all partners, professionals, and stakeholders who contributed to the project over the past three years.

While EDU-MENT has officially concluded, its mission remains important: supporting the people who care for others and helping build more informed, compassionate, and responsive care environments.

Our aim is to address the three main challenges in the early detection, monitoring and response to mental health issues in home-care and residential care:

She seems fine.”
“He is just getting older.”
“It is probably nothing.”
In older-adult care, what appears obvious at first glance may not tell the whole story.
Structured assessment asks us to look beyond the single symptom and consider the person across multiple dimensions: health, cognition, emotion, sleep, nutrition, social life and environment.
Our EPALE story of Maria and Andreas explores exactly this idea:
learning to see the details behind the obvious through the EDU-MENT approach.
Because early identification does not always begin with finding a diagnosis.
Sometimes it begins with noticing a pattern.

Mental-health risk rarely arrives wearing a label.
It may appear as disrupted sleep.
Withdrawal from social activity.
Changes in nutrition.
Problems with memory.
A change in the home environment.
Or several small signals occurring together.
That is why the EDU-MENT Digital Screening Tool takes a multidomain approach.
44 items.
Six domains:
• Demographic characteristics
• Health & comorbidities
• Cognitive & emotional function
• Sleep & nutrition
• Community & lifestyle
• Personal space & environment
Where appropriate, the process can also guide further assessment using established measures.
The objective is simple but clinically important:
to move from isolated observations toward a more structured picture of risk.
We explain the EDU-MENT Digital Screening Tool in our EPALE resource.

Training feels successful when participants say they learned something.
It becomes more interesting when the numbers move too.
In the Cyprus EDU-MENT pilot, selected pre–post indicators showed marked improvement:
Understanding: 3.54 → 4.71
Ability to use the tool: 2.00 → 4.86
Ability to integrate it into practice: 3.10 → 4.43
Overall satisfaction reached 4.9/5.
The 20 participants brought between 1 and 45 years of professional experience and were working in mobile-care settings during the pilot.
That range matters.
Digital innovation in healthcare cannot be designed only for the highly technical user. It has to make sense to professionals with very different backgrounds, experience and levels of familiarity with digital tools.
For us, that is one of the most important lessons from Cyprus.

A good digital health tool should not make the decision for the professional.
It should help the professional see more before making that decision.
This was one of the clearest messages emerging from the EDU-MENT pilots.
Participants reported that the digital assessment could help them identify risk factors, structure conversations and approach older adults’ needs more holistically.
But the result was not viewed as a diagnosis — and not as a replacement for professional assessment.
That distinction matters.
Digital screening has value when it strengthens observation, supports clinical reasoning and creates a more systematic starting point for care.
The goal is not less human judgement.
It is better-informed human judgement.

Three countries. Three care contexts. One question: can digital mental-health screening work where care actually happens?

Over the past months, EDU-MENT moved from development into real-world piloting across Cyprus, Slovenia and Austria.

🇨🇾 Cyprus: 20 participants, combining face-to-face and self-paced learning over 8 weeks.

🇸🇮 Slovenia: 15 participants, bringing the programme into postgraduate nursing education and continuing professional development.

🇦🇹 Austria: 13 registered nurses in a fully online, 6-week pilot.

Different systems. Different professional backgrounds. Different modes of delivery.

But one common objective: giving nurses a structured way to notice mental health and psychosocial risks that can otherwise remain hidden during routine care.

The pilot phase was not simply about asking, “Does the tool work?”

It was about asking the more important question:

Does it work in practice?

New Book Chapter in Progress: Advancing Inclusive and Learner-Centred Digital Education

The SEIT Lab is currently working on our second book chapter developed within the UA-Talent-UP Project, exploring how digital learning environments can be designed to be more inclusive, accessible, and responsive to diverse learner needs. The chapter, titled "Inclusive and Learner-Centred MOOC Design: Accessibility and Personalization in the UA-Talent-UP Platform", examines the innovative MOOC platform developed by the University of Cyprus.

The chapter investigates how accessibility and personalization can be embedded as core design principles in online learning systems, drawing on frameworks such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), learner-centred pedagogy, learning analytics, and adaptive learning technologies. It highlights approaches that support flexible learning pathways, multimodal content delivery, adaptive assessment, and accessibility-by-design features that help meet the needs of diverse learner populations.

Combining conceptual analysis with empirical evidence from platform implementation, the research aims to contribute practical insights for educators, instructional designers, higher education institutions, and policymakers seeking to develop more equitable and learner-focused digital learning environments.

This forthcoming contribution reflects the UA-Talent-UP commitment to enhancing the quality, inclusiveness, and accessibility of higher education through innovative digital solutions and scalable learning opportunities.
