How Russian state media shape the image of the West: A new study by Kuchyňková and Jirušek
How do Russian English-speaking media shape the image of the West and Russia during international crises? In a newly published article in the Media, War & Conflict journal by Sage Publications, Petra Kuchyňková and Martin Jirušek, together with Peter Števkov, focused on the narratives of Russia Today and Sputnik News during the imposition of sanctions in 2014 and following the assassination attempt on Sergei Skripal in 2018.
Their research shows how pro-Kremlin narratives covertly dominate under the guise of objective journalism. The study reveals the techniques these media outlets use to masquerade opinions as standard news reporting, highlighting a growing emphasis on blame-casting and moral judgment that deepens the rift between Russia and the West.
