ARTICLE | Our latest paper, “𝗧𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝟰 𝗔𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻,” has been accepted in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy. 🎉📄

We show that taurine inhibits ApoE4 aggregation and shifts it toward a less harmful ApoE3-like profile—offering new insights into potential therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases. 🧠

A great example of collaboration across Loschmidt Laboratories (Masaryk University & International Clinical Research Center), Masaryk University - Faculty Of Medicine, Masarykův onkologický ústav Brno, České vysoké učení technické v Praze, and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. 🔬

TEACHING | As part of the course 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, students from Přírodovědecká fakulta Masarykovy univerzity, had the opportunity to visit Infocentrum JE Dukovany, tour the Respono waste sorting facility, and the adjacent composting plant at the Kozlany landfill. They also learned about the biogas plant in Velesovice and explored the central composting plant in Brno. 🌱⚡

The excursion, organized by 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗮 from Loschmidt Laboratories, R E C E T O X, offered rare behind-the-scenes access and direct interaction with experts, making the experience both insightful and inspiring.

CONFERENCE | Five of our doctoral students participated in the 𝗖𝘇𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 in Olomouc on April 23–24, 2026. 🎓

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗸 and 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗸𝗮, both recent recipients of the Brno PhD Talent 2025 Award, delivered oral presentations. Martin introduced the AggreProt tool for predicting protein aggregation, while Monika presented the EnzymeMiner platform for discovering new biocatalysts. 🧬

𝗣𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗼𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁, 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘇𝗶𝗮𝗻, and 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗿 𝗞𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗸 presented their work in poster sessions.

The conference enables PhD students to share research and connect in a friendly atmosphere, which our students truly appreciated. 🤝

Thanks to for the support.

NEWS | Our team members 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗸, Martin Sitte, Kája Sedláčková, and 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗸𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗞𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁 recently traveled to the 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗦𝗥𝗙 (Grenoble, France), for two exciting scientific missions. 🔬

On beamline ID29, they focused on preparing and optimizing microcrystals of bioluminescent proteins for serial crystallography experiments. Their second mission took place on beamline ID23, where they collected valuable diffraction data that may help decipher protein structures and provide new insights into bioluminescent systems and Alzheimer’s disease research. 🧬

And beyond the lab, they were rewarded with stunning views of Grenoble and the snow-covered Alps. 🏔️

WORKSHOP | The Spring 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 of the Loschmidt Labs took place at Bowling Brno on April 24, 2026 🎳🔬

Participants engaged in scientific discussions on the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease, research on staphylokinases for stroke treatment, machine learning in drug discovery, and the reaction mechanisms of luciferases. They also enjoyed spending time together and connecting with colleagues from the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute (MMCI) and the Masaryk University - Faculty Of Medicine. 🤝

Some attendees even tried their hand at adventure golf.⛳

LAB CLEANUP | The lab is full today—our team is here for a 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘆 🧹🔬. It may not be the most exciting task, but it’s definitely one of the most useful. A clean and well-organized workspace makes all the difference when it comes to finding and using instruments and materials efficiently.

A big thank you to everyone who showed up and put in the effort 🙌.

ARTICLE | The flurry of new publications continues! 🎉 A newly published article—resulting from a collaboration between the experimental and theoretical teams at Loschmidt Laboratories—titled "Structural Insights into the Evolution of Alpha/Beta-Hydrolase (ABH) Fold Luciferases" has been published in the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀. 🧬

This work reveals crystal structures and dynamical behavior of an ancestral ABH-fold enzyme, highlighting key molecular features behind the transition from hydrolytic to oxygenolytic catalysis and the evolution of luciferase activity. ✨

ARTICLE | Our recent article has been accepted in 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀! 🎉

In this work, the authors show that a single mutation in haloalkane dehalogenases can turn an irreversible SN2 reaction into a fully reversible process. Importantly, this enables halide release and opens the door to greener transhalogenation reactions and potential recycling of halogenated compounds.

Great teamwork—looking forward to what comes next!
