🌍 PQ 1967–2027: The First 60 Years

For nearly 60 years, the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space has been the world’s largest event dedicated to scenography, performance design, and performance space. Since its founding in 1967, PQ has continuously evolved, navigating political and cultural shifts while remaining a vital space for scenographic innovation. Taking place every four years without interruption, it has grown into a global meeting ground for performance designers, artists, scholars, and students, fostering interdisciplinary and intergenerational exchange across artistic and cultural differences.
In collaboration with the Prague Quadrennial (PQ) we are opening a public call for contribution to a themed issue of Theatralia. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the opening of the PQ we invite authors to submit essays for the peer-reviewed section of the issue that will be printed in time for the next PQ in June 2027.
We are aiming at 5 high-quality essays in English or Czech that explore the history of PQ as an international cultural phenomenon by highlighting the local histories, national and regional contributions and international collaborations that have shaped its form throughout the years. We welcome submissions within the disciplines of theatre studies, scenography, performance design, cultural history and curatorship that explore PQ’s role in the development of scenography, performance design, and space; its evolving curatorial and exhibition strategies; and its function as a platform for cultural diplomacy and exchange.
📄 The target length of the essay, comprising footnotes and bibliography, is 4,500–6,500 words (or 30,000–45,000 characters including spaces).
In keeping with the academic policy of the journal, the essay should:
🔹 work with concrete material (directly related to the history of PQ);
🔹 provide a clear and current theoretical framework;
🔹 offer a transparent research agenda (so that readers clearly understand what the material basis and the methodology are);
🔹 make an original contribution to existing knowledge; and,
🔹 be written in a plain, succinct style.
🔍 All articles in the peer-reviewed sections will undergo double-blind peer review.
In addition to scholarly essays, we aim to open the publication to a wider range of voices by including shorter testimonials and personal reflections by artists, curators, and other collaborators whose lived experiences illuminate PQ’s role over time. Bezmála šedesát let představuje Pražské Quadriennale největší světovou platformu scénografie, performančního designu a divadelního prostoru. Od svého založení v roce 1967 se PQ neustále vyvíjí, reaguje na politické a kulturní proměny a představuje klíčový prostor scénografické inovace. Od založení se koná pravidelně každé čtyři roky a za tu dobu se rozrostlo v mezinárodní fórum propojující scénograf*y, umělce*kyně, badatele*ky a studentstvo z celého světa, které podporuje interdisciplinární i mezigenerační dialog napříč uměleckými a kulturními kontexty.
Ve spolupráci s Pražským Quadriennale vyhlašujeme veřejnou výzvu k zasílání příspěvků do tematického čísla časopisu Theatralia. U příležitosti 60. výročí PQ zveme autorky a autory k zasílání studií do recenzované části čísla, které vyjde do června 2027, kdy se příští PQ koná.
Cílem je publikovat pět kvalitních odborných studií v angličtině nebo češtině, které zkoumají dějiny PQ jako mezinárodní kulturní fenomén a zdůrazňují místní historie, národní a regionální přínosy i mezinárodní spolupráce, které podobu PQ formovaly. Uvítáme příspěvky z oblasti divadelních studií, scénografie, performančního designu, kulturních dějin a kurátorství, které se zabývají úlohou PQ ve vývoji scénografie, performančního designu a prostoru; proměnami kurátorských a výstavních přístupů; a také rolí PQ jako místa kulturní diplomacie a mezinárodní výměny.
📄 Rozsah studie, včetně poznámek a bibliografie, je 4 500–6 500 slov (tj. 30 000–45 000 znaků včetně mezer).
V souladu s kritérii časopisu by studie měla:
🔹 pracovat s konkrétním materiálem přímo souvisejícím s dějinami PQ;
🔹 mít jasně vymezený a aktuální teoretický rámec;
🔹 zřetelně prezentovat svůj výzkum (tak, aby čtenářům byly zřejmé materiálová základna a metodologie);
🔹 mít přínos k současnému stavu poznání;
🔹 být napsána srozumitelným a věcným stylem.
🔍 Všechny studie zařazené do recenzované části projdou oboustranně anonymním recenzním řízením.
Vedle odborných studií vítáme publikace širšího spektra: kratší svědectví a osobní reflexe umělců, kurátorů a dalších spolupracovníků, jejichž zkušenosti mohou osvětlit historickou, kulturní a politickou roli PQ.
