Echoes of the Researchers' Night: "Communication Lab of the Future"

🙌 The Department of English and American Studies was represented in the “Communication Lab” of the 2026 Researchers' Night!

🌐 Foreign language didactics (English, German, Russian, and Spanish) joined forces for a presentation on “metalinguistic” communication.

😝 The topic “Not All Smileys Are Created Equal" was a great success, as it focused on inter-generational understanding, allowing even the youngest participants to tackle language and put themselves in the shoes of a linguistic researcher.

🤝 Language was not taught but examined; assembled and disassembled. Communication was taken apart and freed from the rules a single "correct" language.

If you missed your chance, we will see you again next year!

🧏 Understanding How d/Deaf Learners Read in EFL Contexts: Between the Lines

Mgr. Jitka Sedláčková, Ph.D. has published a new monograph with prestigious Springer publishing.

This book presents case studies of prelingually d/Deaf learners to illuminate real-world EFL reading challenges and strategies, offers research-based, actionable recommendations for EFL educators working with d/Deaf foreign language learners, and integrates insights from deaf studies, second-language acquisition, and reading skills development. Focusing on the unique challenges and linguistic circumstances of d/Deaf learners, it offers a detailed exploration of how these students navigate foreign language reading, where written input is often their primary access point to language learning. A central contribution of this work is the introduction of the concept of reading in L(1+1), a framework capturing the dual influence of sign language and spoken/written language on d/Deaf learners’ reading development. This is an essential resource for teachers and researchers seeking to create more inclusive, effective language learning environments for d/Deaf students.

So you have decided to study at DEAS... 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇦🇺🇨🇦
We’re happy to hear that! You surely have a lot of questions, be they about mandatory courses, school clubs, or the Information System, and we are here to help you get acquainted with your studies! 📖

During orientation week, first-year bachelor’s students will have the chance to attend several events that will help them understand studying at DEAS.

On Wednesday, 9th September at 10 AM, the English Students’ Club organises Freshmen Tutorial where older students introduce the department in a less formal environment. 🫂

Then, on Thursday, 10th September at 2 PM, students can (and should!) attend the official meeting of the department. Teachers and lecturers will welcome the first years, tell them a bit about the history of DEAS, what the expectations for students at DEAS are, and more technical information. 📜

For MA students, respectively, the meetings are on Thursday, 10th September at 10 AM for English Language and Literature students, Wednesday, 9th September at 10 AM for English Translation students, and Tuesday, 8th September at 12 PM for Secondary School Teaching students. 🧑‍🏫

On Friday, 11th September at 9 AM, representatives of school clubs will give a presentation on the clubs of DEAS. Students will get to know the clubs that function at the department with the possibility to join. 🫵

The week finishes off on Sunday, 13th September at 1 PM with a Day with GWP Company, a student-led theatre club, where newcomers will learn about the company, how to join, and meet like-minded colleagues. The event is followed by auditions for the company’s upcoming production, Little Women, which will take place on Monday, 14th September at 6 PM. And that’s also when the semester officially starts; 14th September! 🎭

We hope to see you throughout the orientation week. Good luck! 🍀

The first research seminar of Fall Semester 2026 is already planned! This time with an Australian researcher, Serrin Rutledge-Prior!

🗓️ When?
Friday, September 18, 12:00
📍 Where?
Room G33, Department of English and American Studies

Don’t miss the exciting seminar on “Confined then in Cages like the Feathered Race”: Astell, Wollstonecraft, and the Politics of Domicilisation.

Abstract: Early liberal thought is rarely kind to nonhuman animals, who are overwhelmingly presented as irrational, unthinking, and – well – brutish. No wonder, then, that contemporary animal political theorists have looked elsewhere to provide normative underpinnings for their theories of animal liberation and zoopolitics. This paper, however, holds that there are resources for developing more-than-human, emancipatory theory within the works of certain early liberal thinkers. To do this, the paper explores the work of Mary Astell
(1666-1731) and Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797), both early advocates of women’s liberty. The paper argues that their compelling critiques of
domestic(ated) femininity can be extended beyond the human, giving us insight both into the nature of the injustices faced by domesticated “pet” animals, and the paths we might take to overcome these injustices.

Bio:
Serrin Rutledge-Prior is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies at the University of Helsinki Fellow. Prior to this, she has worked at Queen’s University at Kingston (Katarokwi) and the Australian National University and, in 2024, was a Visiting Researcher at the Cambridge Centre for Animal Rights Law. Serrin’s research is concerned with how we can better respond to the interests and agency of animals in political and legal contexts, and how we might reimagine the place of animals within political thought. Beyond these topics, she is also interested the role of animal advocates in the public sphere, and when or whether civil – or even uncivil – disobedience on behalf of animals can be justified. Her first book, Multispecies Legality: Animals and the Foundation of Legal Inclusion, was published with Cambridge University Press in 2025, and her next book, Zoopolitical Thought: Seeking Interspecies Justice in and beyond Western Political Traditions (co-edited with André Krebber) is forthcoming with the University of Toronto Press.

✍ Zita is an expert on early English literature, including the works of William Shakespeare. Did you know that she wrote the introduction to the new Czech translation of Much Ado About Nothing by our student Anna Hrdinová?
"I really enjoyed writing the introduction to Much Ado About Nothing," said Zita, "partly because I am a fan of the sharp and witty exchanges between Beatrice and Benedick."

🏙 And how did she enjoy her stay in Brno?
"My visit to Brno was equally rewarding: a beautiful city with a rich cultural life, excellent food and b**r, and the pleasure of teaching such intelligent and lovely students."

Many thanks to Zita for visiting us! ❤
