The emeritus brewmaster of the FAT mini-brewery was inducted into the Brewing and Malting Hall of Fame 🏆🍺

At the ceremonial St. Wenceslas Festival of the Czech Association of Breweries and Malthouses, Mr. Libor Smutek, Emeritus Brewmaster of the FAT USB Research and Teaching Mini-Brewery, was inducted into the Czech Brewing and Malting Hall of Fame. He was joined by Bohuslav Kandrnál, who was also honored for his lifelong contribution to the field.

This prestigious award recognizes long-standing professional work, the passing of expertise to younger generations, and a significant influence on the development of brewing culture in the Czech Republic.

We are delighted that among the eminent figures who have helped shape the profile and prestige of brewing education at the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology at USB is now a direct participant and guarantor of our mini-brewery. Mr. Smutek’s induction into the Hall of Fame reflects the importance of connecting research, practice, and teaching.

The University of South Bohemia will be the first in the Czech Republic to offer future teachers a course on outdoor education in kindergartens 👧👦💚

In cooperation with the Karel Komárek Family Foundation (KKFF), the USB has introduced a new course, "Outdoor Education in the Kindergarten Environment" 🐛 -the first of its kind in the country. Together, we are contributing to a broader systemic change in education that aims to integrate outdoor learning into the pedagogical process and shift public perception on this important topic.

Experts have praised this initiative, noting its potential to improve the quality of preschool education and positively influence children's mental and physical development. 🫶

We strongly advocate for the idea that outdoor learning—especially in a well-designed school garden—is essential for healthy development and for nurturing a child’s relationship with nature. 🐣 That’s why the Foundation has brought together a multidisciplinary team of experts to lay the groundwork for long-term change in the Czech education system.

International Symposium on the Challenges Influencing the Strengthening of the Role of Nurses in Modern Society 👩🏻‍⚕️🧑🏼‍⚕️

The symposium, held at the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, University of South Bohemia (FHSS USB), opened a new cycle of nursing, scientific, and international meetings. The faculty is hosting 70 active participants who, in their presentations and discussions, analyse nursing in a broad context. The main theme of the 17th edition of this prestigious event – originally initiated by the FHSS USB – is the challenges influencing the strengthening of the role of nurses in modern society. 💪

Presenters and other guests focused primarily on issues of clinical and multicultural care and community care, trends in nursing education, and Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN). Closely related to the main theme is a wide range of research and contexts that are important and useful for everyday life. These include, for example, the impact of climate change on human health or the prevention of oncological diseases in people with intellectual disabilities. A number of very interesting and practical topics, illustrating the diverse scope of the issues, were contributed to the programme by FHSS USB members. 👏

Teaching in the heart of the rainforest: Students discovered the secrets of tropical ecology in Papua New Guinea 💚

Dr. Ghorbani Honored with the Prestigious Jakub Krčín Award 👏

The prestigious Jakub Krčín Award has come to our faculty this year thanks to the outstanding research of one of our scientists. At the ceremonial opening of the academic year, Vice-Dean Assoc. Prof. Ing. Jan Bárta, Ph.D., accepted the prestigious Jakub Krčín Award on behalf of his colleague, MSc. Mohammad Ghorbani, Ph.D., who is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan, USA.

Dr. Ghorbani received the award in the category of Agricultural and Fisheries Sciences for his contribution to the study of biochar modification and the analysis of this promising material. His scientific work, carried out in collaboration with experts from the Department of Agroecosystems and the Department of Plant Production of our faculty, has achieved remarkable success on the international stage.

The research results were published by the renowned publishing house PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE, with the article ranking in the most prestigious first decile of the Web of Science database in the field of Mechanics and Thermodynamics. The achievement is further underscored by long-term cooperation with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).

Dr. Ghorbani, who is currently advancing his expertise in Michigan, stated in writing: “I deeply value this award and thank the University of South Bohemia for supporting my scientific work.”

The University of South Bohemia canteen has reopened after renovation 🥯

New design in both dining halls, new furniture 🪑, bar seating – during the summer break, the USB canteen was transformed into a modern 🤩 dining facility, a change that will be felt not only by diners but also by the staff. The space is now modern, comfortable, and sustainable. 🫶

A major change also took place behind the scenes – the staff now cook on new equipment 🥘 that is more energy-efficient and user-friendly, catering to modern gastronomic operations. One of the notable innovations is the option to cook overnight without on-site staff.

A brand-new feature is the 🥗 salad bar, where diners can mix a full meal according to their preferences. The menu still includes hot dishes (always with one vegetarian option), quick-serve meals, and fresh pizza. The canteen is also planning themed weeks for USB students and employees. 👻

The new canteen will accommodate the needs of people with specific requirements. These modifications are co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

We believe that all diners will appreciate the modern and comfortable environment and will return to the USB canteen for enjoyable gastronomic experiences. 😋

Success of PhD Student Gabriela Krejčová in Prestigious European Competition 🥳👏

We are proud to announce that our PhD student Gabriela Krejčová, from Adam Bajgar’s Laboratory at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, has achieved significant international recognition. She was named one of three finalists for the EDS Best PhD Thesis Prize 2025, awarded by the European Drosophila Society (EDS). 🏆

Gabriela was recognized for her dissertation titled “The Role of Macrophages in the Regulation of Systemic Metabolism in Drosophila”, which brings new insights into how immune cells influence metabolic processes in the body. Her research, conducted using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, contributes to a deeper understanding of the connection between the immune system and metabolism – a topic with potential implications for human health research. 🫶

The award includes not only a financial prize but also the opportunity to present research findings at the prestigious European Drosophila Research Conference (EDRC). 🤩

We warmly congratulate Gabriela on this exceptional achievement and thank her for representing our institution on the international scientific stage! 👏👏

A graduate of the Biological Chemistry program at the Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia will search for life on Mars 💫 🤩 👏

As a researcher, he mainly focuses on mapping. He himself says that without participating in the Polar Ecology course at the Czech Arctic Research Station of the University of South Bohemia ❤️ in Svalbard, he would never have made it into the European Space Agency (ESA) project. Argentinean Lucas Fernandez has already moved to the Netherlands, where he is starting his work on the ExoMars mission these days.

The entire month of May at the University of South Bohemia was marked by cycling and solidarity 🚴🏻‍♂️.

Students, staff, alumni, and partners of the USB took part in 🦵the Academic Bicycle Challenge 2025. The absolute winner of this year’s challenge came from among them, covering an incredible 🤩 5,225 kilometers in 30 days, which is one and a half times the length of the Tour de France. Every kilometer participants cycled during May meant one crown donated to support people with autism. ❤️

However, this year’s Academic Bicycle Challenge was about more than just numbers and performances. The challenge united the entire university 🫶 in an effort to overcome barriers, push boundaries, and do something for themselves and others. The charitable purpose of the event motivated riders, knowing that their efforts would help someone who cannot do without the help of others.

Thanks also go to this year’s ABC Challenge partners – Leader Fox, Budějovický Budvar, and the ČEZ Group. 👏

The USB football team ⚽️ managed to defeat 🔥 its traditional rival from VŠTE 1:0 in an exciting match and dominated the Battle of Budějovice again just like in hockey. 🤟

🏵️ Our University have succeeded in the call of the Operational Programme Jan Amos Komenský (OP JAK) and is launching the implementation of an ambitious biomedical project called MEDDA – Medical Database (Evolution in Medical Diagnostics).

🏩 The project addresses current needs in healthcare and scientific research by connecting top laboratories, clinical workplaces, and data technologies to jointly contribute to improving care for the most vulnerable patients – premature infants.

👏 The MEDDA project provides our Faculty of Science with an opportunity to connect theoretical research with practical application and contributes to the education of a new generation of experts capable of working at the intersection of natural sciences, medicine, and data technologies.
