🚒 Today, an emergency exercise by the Fire Rescue Service of the Hradec Králové Region took place at student dormitories on Palachova Street. The aim was to test both the UHK infrastructure and the preparedness of the firefighters. The exercise itself was preceded by a series of training sessions for both our students and UHK employees.

We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation – the dormitory staff performed excellently, and the accommodated students acted exemplary as well.

A great success for the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Hradec Králové! Assoc. Prof. Petr Šída from the Katedra archeologie UHK - Department of Archaeology UHK together with Assoc. Prof. Petr Pokorný (Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Palaeoecology University of South Bohemia) won the Magnesia Litera Award for Non-fiction for the book Hinterland: Archaeology of the Sandstone Landscapes of Northern Bohemia.

The book addresses the postglacial development of the landscape and the mutual relationship between nature and human society, combining approaches from traditional disciplines such as ecology, botany, archaeology, and Quaternary geology, and shows how "detective" work with indirect data can reconstruct the past, from climate to vegetation to traces of human activity in the last approximately 16,000 years.

Celebrate the International Romani Day with us and visit the Researcher story, an interview with Kateřina Andršová.

🎷She professionally focuses on Romani music and culture, which is also a hobby she shares with her husband. She sometimes speaks Romani with her daughter, and when the wider family gets together, they like to make music together. At the Faculty of Education, University of Hradec Králové, Kateřina Andršová teaches courses in ethnomusicology and coordinates international activities at the Music Department.

🪗Kateřina Andršová claims that there are no untalented people and that everyone can learn music. “My daughter plays several instruments, most often the piano, and when someone tells her that she has a talent from God, she gets angry. And that is because she realizes how many hours she practices every day in order to meet the demands she places on herself.”

🕊️ We have once again hoisted the Tibetan flag in front of the Rectorate building as a symbol of solidarity with the people striving for freedom. We commemorate the Tibetan national uprising of 1959, a moment that still shows the power of the human desire for dignity, independence, and the right to decide on one's own future. With this gesture, we also commit to the values of peace, justice, and respect for human rights for all, which should remain part of the public space and the academic environment.

🇬🇭 “We have to appreciate the fast-paced development of research support institutions at the University of Ghana, Legon (UoG). It is truly remarkable what they have achieved in supporting science, researchers, and innovative students. I am pleased that we can welcome our strategic partners and discuss our shared activities for a common future in person,” says UHK Rector, Jan Kříž, on the occasion of the visit of our partners and friends from the UoG 🤝

🌍 The delegation, led by the Vice-Chancellor of the UoG, Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, is in Hradec to attend formal meetings and to appreciate the hospitality that their students praise upon their return from Hradec Králové.

It's the International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 👩‍💼

Do you ever feel that an autonomous vacuum cleaner, a smart washing machine, or a fridge with Wi-Fi creates more work instead of helping you? 🤔
You are not alone! Sociologist Nina Andrš Fárová from the Department of Sociology at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Hradec Králové 💚 began researching smart homes in connection with gender during her Fulbright stay in the USA. 🇺🇸
Today, she explains why even in an era of technological advances, women are still disproportionately burdened with domestic work, how artificial intelligence enters the issue, and how our education system contributes to inequalities.
