to the thesis project by - Main Train Station in Brno //
“For a hardly believable period of ninety-four years, Brno has been deciding on the location of its main train station. The construction of the new station almost began several times, but historical events such as the Great Depression in 1929, World War II and the post-war reconstruction, or the occupation in 1968 always postponed it.
The new rail station should emerge as the nucleus of a multi-modal junction of international, national and regional passenger rail transport, with connections to regional and super-regional bus transport, city public transport, and other forms of mobility in the city – foot, cycle, etc. Apart from that the train station forms a center of a new district, creates a spatial dominant in the region and offers a variety of different functions and spaces, suitable for the city of the future.
The New Train Station building with its attached functions as one whole, with a relation to an emerging urban block surrounding. Due to its spatial arrangement, the new volume does not create a barrier in the city and promotes the natural flows of pedestrians. It works with sight lines and creates thus a connection to the historical center. Great emphasis is placed on easy orientation for passengers and the shortest possible transfer distances for all modes of transport.
Architecturally, the building's language is based on an effort to reduce the size of the scale and create a pleasant human environment at all levels. Natural daylight is an important part of the design both on platforms and in spaces under the railway body.”
