From Písek to Budapest and into the pages of history.

FAMO screenwriting student Aleš is currently spending a semester abroad as part of his BA at the University of Theatre and Film Arts (SZFE) in Budapest.

One of our newest partner institutions, SZFE is one of Central Europe’s most historic film and theatre schools, known for its strong artistic tradition and hands-on creative training. Aleš is the first student from The Film Academy of Miroslav Ondříček in Písek to study there; and he’s making the most of it.

He’s enjoying the classes, the professors, and the creative environment — but also something unexpected: being part of the atmosphere in Budapest following the recent Prime Minister election festivities 🇭🇺.

Because studying abroad isn’t just about filmmaking — it’s about experiencing moments you never planned for.

You never know where storytelling will take you.

FAMO graduates Mariam & Erik are currently working in Fuerteventura with audiovisual production company Alventio — embracing both a new professional chapter and a new rhythm of life.

For once, it’s a 9-to-5.
Shared breakfasts with colleagues.

Before the Film Academy of Miroslav Ondříček in Písek, there was the Private Film College in Písek (SVOŠF).

Founded in 1996 by cinematographer Miloň Terč and his wife Vladana, SVOŠF laid the foundations for what would later grow into today’s FAMO — with a clear focus on vocational training, practical film craft, and teaching by working industry professionals.

From this small South Bohemian town, students have gone on to achieve international recognition — including premieres at Cannes, European Film Award–winning documentaries, World Press Photo recognition, and Academy Award-winning visual effects work on Dune.

Most recently, in 2025, Lukáš Vácula’s Death Lives was selected as one of just seven finalists in the Live Action Narrative category at the Student Academy Awards, from more than 3,127 submissions.

Today, SVOŠF continues to shine — nurturing new voices and producing exceptional films, just as it has for three decades.

This year, the Private Film College in Písek celebrates 30 years of filmmaking, craft, and creative courage — the place where our story began. 🎬

At Hong Kong Baptist University, the future of filmmaking isn’t just discussed - it’s built, tested, and explored by their students 🎬

During our visit, we were impressed by the university’s investment in cutting-edge production infrastructure, including state-of-the-art virtual production spaces and immersive LED volume walls.

What stood out most, however, was access. Students aren’t just introduced to these tools - they actively work with them, experiment, and gain hands-on experience in a future pathway of film independent of physical locations.

We look forward to continuing discussions with Hong Kong Baptist University and exploring opportunities for our respective student communities 🇭🇰🇨🇿 to experience the distinct learning environments each of our institutions offers.

It’s not a house, it’s a home — and a home is a castle 🏰.

For us, that place is Písek. While many expect us to be based in Prague, we proudly call ourselves Písečané. Just 100 km south of the capital, you’ll find us surrounded by forested hills, golden fields, and shimmering ponds — set along the Otava River, and connected by the oldest stone bridge in the country.

Písek offers something rare: an authentic Czech experience shaped by culture, community, and the quiet space needed to create 🎬

Wherever we go in the world, we don’t just talk about our school — we start by talking about where we belong.

On our most recent trip to the United States generously supported by the town of Písek (in February), we visited institutions across Virginia and Texas. We met with foreign students, faculty, members of the Czech diaspora as well as our own graduates, and local communities — sharing not only our programs, but the story of our home.

And wherever we go, one thing is always clear: we are the Film Academy of Miroslav Ondříček in Písek — in Písek.

Thanks to journeys like this, we’ve welcomed study abroad groups from universities in the USA and China, while continuing to grow a vibrant international community through our English-language programs 🌍.

Our sincere thanks to the town of Písek for their continued support in helping us share our home —and our story — with the world.

Mr Nobody Against Putin 🎬 won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature at the 98th Academy Awards, making it the first Czech documentary ever to receive such honour 👏🇨🇿.

🏆 Our graduate Julie Dančová also participated in this Oscar-winning documentary. She joined the project while completing her Master’s degree at FAMO, working as a production assistant. After graduating, she continued in a production manager role.

A week of film, inspiration, and international connections in Hong Kong 🎬🇭🇰.

Representatives from Písek’s film schools (FAMO & SVOŠF) took part in the annual FilmArt exhibition — Asia’s largest film and entertainment industry event, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

From country pavilions and production showcases to panel discussions, workshops with leading professionals, and film screenings, the week offered a dynamic snapshot of the global industry.

A key highlight was visiting some of Hong Kong’s top film institutions — Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture, Hong Kong Design Institute, University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Baptist University — where we continued in-person discussions on study abroad opportunities and future collaborations.

It’s hard not to be inspired in a place that has shaped global cinema through legends like Jackie Chan, Wong Kar-wai, John Woo, Johnnie To, and Tsui Hark.

We’re also excited to have secured new partnerships with local festivals eager to showcase our students’ work 🌏.
