🚫 “Technology isn’t for girls.”
➡️ Reality? At our faculty, we see it completely differently every single day.

👩‍🔬 Today, on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we are reminded that science isn’t just about formulas and laboratories. It’s mainly about people who have the courage to try new things and look for solutions where others stop.

Women at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEL) at UWB are involved in research and projects in areas such as:
⚡ e-mobility
🧵 smart textiles
🤖 robotics and automation
🧠 artificial intelligence
🔋 modern energy and battery systems
📡 communication and smart technologies

Thank you to all female students, PhD candidates, researchers, and teachers at FEL UWB 💙 You are an important part of the future.

🏆 FEL UWB wins at Smart Cities 2025!

Our researchers once again proved that innovation thrives at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering! At this year’s prestigious Smart Cities 2025 awards, we took home two honors:

👟 1st place in the Safety category goes to our team for developing smart boots and gloves for emergency responders. The system helps track firefighters, police, and paramedics in real time—even in buildings where GPS fails. Developed in close cooperation with firefighters, the technology is already on its way to real-world deployment. Huge congratulations to the team behind this life-saving innovation!

💧 The Agile Pilot Special Prize was awarded to the nextdrop project, which monitors water infrastructure and raises public awareness about water use. Whether in Techmania, residential areas, or the zoo, nextdrop connects real-time data with education and impact.

👏 Big congratulations to both teams — thank you for representing our faculty with excellence and ingenuity. We’re proud of you! ⚡

A research team from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of UWB won the safety category with smart boots and gloves that track firefighters, police and paramedics even without satellite signal. Ninety-three projects from across Czechia entered the Smart Cities competition this year.

When firefighters charge into smoke-filled buildings and basements where they can’t see beyond their own hands, a tiny tracker hidden in their boots, paired with a light-based guide in their gloves, maps every step they take in real time. The system, developed by a research team at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, helps them stay oriented, while commanders follow the exact position of each unit on a tablet. The smart gear was created hand-in-hand with firefighters, who had long been missing anything of this kind. “The built-in navigation can even lead rescuers straight to the person in danger. In a crisis, that can make all the difference in saving lives,” said Radek Soukup, one of the authors of the project.

By the end of 2027, Czech astronaut Aleš Svoboda could fly to the International Space Station (ISS). He plans to take 13 scientific experiments from Czech universities and research centres. And one is being co-developed by researchers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at UWB.

Astronauts can lose up to 30 % of their muscle mass during just one month in microgravity (Williams et al., 2009). This significantly reduces their performance and safety upon returning to Earth. Researchers from FEL UWB in Pilsen, together with colleagues from the Czech Technical University in Prague and the companies VÚB and G. L. Electronics, therefore focused on developing the AstroMoWe experiment — a smart textile system that will monitor astronauts’ muscle activity on board the ISS. The technology also promises benefits for everyday life on Earth.

A day full of short popularization lectures and panel discussions as part of the nationwide AI Days 2025 was organized on Friday, 14 November by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEL) in cooperation with the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAV). Not only researchers and students but also interested members of the public could get a glimpse behind the scenes of artificial intelligence and its applications—from hospitals and classrooms to environmental protection. AI was discussed openly and the speakers presented not only its potential but also the risks associated with it.

🔧 Visit to Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V. in Ratingen – Collaboration with FEL UWB 🇩🇪

Representatives of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of West Bohemia visited the technology center of Mitsubishi Electric in Ratingen, Germany. The program included a presentation of our project focused on testing power IGBT modules, a tour of their state-of-the-art laboratories, and discussions on the future direction of joint research.

📌 The outcome of the meeting includes an expanded collaboration:
preparation of new contract research projects,
opportunities for PhD internships at the Mitsubishi Corporate Research center in Japan,
and training possibilities for both students and staff of FEL in the field of power semiconductor chip design.

💡 Collaborating with global industry leaders is crucial for our faculty – not only for sharing know-how, but also as a way to bring our research closer to real-world applications. ⚡
