💧🌿 Another day, another field trip — this time exploring natural vs. constructed wetlands.

We compared how these systems function:
Natural wetlands develop on their own and support rich biodiversity, while constructed wetlands are designed by humans — in this case, built to treat wastewater from a small village.

In the field, we looked at soil profiles and estimated carbon storage, observed iron-rich sediments (giving the water and banks that characteristic reddish color), and even examined aerenchyma in common reed (Phragmites) — a special tissue that helps plants survive in waterlogged conditions.

And of course, wetlands wouldn’t be complete without wildlife — 🐸 (check photo 11!) reminding us how important these habitats are for biodiversity.

From ecosystem services to real-world applications, wetlands are doing more than meets the eye.

🌿 Fieldwork isn’t just for students — it’s a key part of the research happening at our faculty.
At the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, researchers regularly head into the field to collect real data that helps us better understand and protect ecosystems.

One example is the IDEAL project, focused on monitoring water quality in streams near České Švýcarsko National Park. Every month, researchers visit selected sites to take samples and assess water quality, hydromorphological conditions, and ecological status.

This long-term monitoring helps track environmental changes and supports better management and conservation of freshwater ecosystems. 💧

From classrooms to rivers — this is what environmental science looks like in practice!

🌿🏛️ From Prague to the vibrant streets of Thessaloniki!
Our student Vendula Špačková (Nature Conservation) traded the Prague hustle for a laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle during her Erasmus+ exchange at Aristotle University. 🇬🇷
✨ She fully immersed herself in the Greek “city of students,” enjoying epic ESN trips to Corfu, the lively social scene in the city center, and the incredible perk of three free meals a day at the university canteen. 🌮🌊

Thessaloniki offers a safe, welcoming vibe and the perfect flexible schedule for anyone looking to travel and explore the mainland’s unique culture. Check out her full article for all the tips, and feel free to contact Vendy directly if you have any questions! 📩

CZU takes the win! 🏆💧

Our students recently participated in an international Student Challenge together with TU Dresden and UJEP, where they developed educational concepts focused on water protection and environmental awareness.

A huge congratulations to Tabea Kottek & Aswathi Gopinath, whose project
“Water Pollution and Protection – an Interactive Teaching Concept” won the competition! 🎉

We are also very proud of Ana Andjelkovic & Victoria Zueva, who represented CZU with another inspiring project in the final round 👏

Amazing work by all participants — and a great example of how student ideas can contribute to a more sustainable future 🌍💚

🇬🇧 Our graduate student Eliška Pechlátová Manchester!

🍃At the beginning of March, she joined the Environmental Research & Innovation Centre (ERIC) at as a visiting researcher. She will be will be engaging in work on a PhD level at the intersection of remote sensing, biodiversity, sustainable urban design, and policy.

Her role will involve working alongside professor Mike Hardman, contributing to various projects within the university, as well as adjacent university partner initiatives. Currently, the plan is to get involved in regional, national and international research, enterprise experience, and exposure to university-level teaching.

One of the projects she will be working on over the course of her internship will be the GreenME Project, which is a Horizon Europe project aimed at mapping areas where nature-based therapy can be scaled to improve adult mental health. She will also be involved in seagrass meadows habitat suitability mapping project in Weymouth, as well as hydrochemistry lab work.

🪨🌿 Sometimes the best classroom is outside.
As part of our Palaeoecology course, we headed to Prokopské údolí — one of Prague’s most fascinating natural areas, where geology, archaeology, and landscape history come together.

This protected valley is known for its limestone bedrock, old quarries, and visible geological layers that tell the story of an ancient sea that once covered this area. It’s also an important place for understanding how landscapes developed over time and how people have used them for centuries.

Along the way, we explored sites where you can find fossils in the limestone, striking rock formations, and traces of the area’s industrial and settlement history. We also visited places connected to the valley’s archaeological significance, where the surrounding landscape helps reveal how humans and nature shaped each other over time.

📍Not far from Prague, Prokopské údolí is a perfect example of how much Earth’s history can be hidden in one walk.
