New research led by Vítězslav Moudrý highlights the limits of satellite-based canopy height products in Europe

A new open-access study led by Vítězslav Moudrý and an international research team, published in Earth and Space Science, shows that global and continental canopy height models derived from satellite data still contain substantial errors.

The authors demonstrate that airborne laser scanning (ALS) data—already available across much of Europe—provide significantly higher accuracy than many satellite-based products. At least 33 European countries currently have nationwide or near-nationwide ALS coverage collected by governmental institutions.

The study calls for better coordination, harmonisation, and open access to existing ALS datasets to enable the creation of a European-wide canopy height model, supporting ecosystem monitoring, biodiversity research, forest management, and future Earth observation missions.

New scientific article just out in Trends in Ecology & Evolution!
The study “Cultivated lands: blind spots in global biodiversity data” highlights how farmland — covering nearly half of the planet’s habitable land — remains a major blind spot in global biodiversity monitoring.

We’re proud that Anna F. Cord, a key member of our EarthBridge project, is one of the co-authors. 🙌

The research calls for stronger engagement of farmers, smarter use of digital agriculture, and better data-sharing to close biodiversity knowledge gaps in cultivated lands — goals that align perfectly with the EarthBridge mission. 🌾🌱

New publication by Petra Pracná and colleagues explores how to map Earth’s terrain in unprecedented detail!

A team from the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, led by Petra Pracná and including Vítězslav Moudrý, Eliška Šárovcová, Kateřina Gdulová, and international partners, has published a new study in Science of Remote Sensing — funded by the Horizon Europe project EarthBridge.

By combining data from NASA’s ICESat-2 and GEDI missions, the researchers created 90-metre Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) with remarkable accuracy, even outperforming existing models like Copernicus DEM in forested areas. 🌲🌍

“We are getting closer to truly global, high-accuracy terrain models derived from satellite laser data,” says lead author Petra Pracná.

New blog post on EarthBridge!

How accurate can global terrain models get using only satellite lidar data?
In her new article, Petra Pracná — “Towards 90 m Resolution Digital Terrain Models from Spaceborne Lidar: Balancing Accuracy and Sampling Intensity”, explores how NASA’s ICESat-2 and GEDI missions can be combined to create detailed 90 m DTMs across the globe.

The study shows that spaceborne lidar can achieve accuracy comparable to — or even better than — global datasets like Copernicus GLO-90 DEM, especially in mountainous and forested regions.

New blog post on EarthBridge!

How can we tell prehistoric mining from modern extraction?
In the new article by Jan Fišer, “Mining palimpsest: Distinguishing between prehistoric and modern mining using remote sensing methods, field survey and MaxEnt,” we explore the quartzite deposits at Písečný vrch near Most, Czech Republic — a place where mining history stretches back thousands of years.

By combining remote sensing data, field survey, and MaxEnt modeling, the study reveals how to distinguish between ancient and 20th-century pits, uncovering layers of human activity hidden in the landscape.

The EarthBridge Conference in Kostelec nad Černými lesy has officially begun! ✨ After a warm welcome, the first keynote was delivered by Matthias Forkel on “Earth Observation and Environmental Practice: Bridging, Reinventing the Wheel or Ready for Take-off?” 🚀
The second inspiring talk came from Duccio Rocchini (University of Bologna) on “Reckoning descriptors of diversity from space: generalized entropy in action.” 🌍

And this is just the beginning – many more exciting topics and speakers are ahead, and we’re looking forward to them all! 🌟

Our colleague Vítězslav Moudrý from the EarthBridge team has co-authored a new scientific article in Forest Ecology and Management!

Using NASA’s GEDI spaceborne lidar, the study reveals how protected forests in Central Europe have been changing since 2019. While the upper tree canopy is declining due to droughts and bark beetle outbreaks, the understorey is expanding, showing signs of natural regeneration. 🌳🌱

Key takeaway: GEDI offers a unique vertical perspective, showing not only forest loss but also recovery processes hidden beneath the canopy.

CZU researchers at the GfÖ Annual Meeting in Würzburg!

From September 15–19, 2025, our colleagues Dominika Prajzlerová, Vítězslav Moudrý, and Vojtěch Barták proudly represented CZU at the 54th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (GfÖ).

🌱 Dominika spoke about how seasonal changes in vegetation affect bird distribution models.
📊 Vítězslav presented on errors in environmental & species data – his talk drew exceptionally high attendance at the conference!
🌍 Vojtěch showcased a new method for creating high-resolution global canopy height models.

Global landscapes under scrutiny!
Vítězslav Moudrý from the Czech University of Life Sciences took part in the 8th Geomorphometry Conference in Perugia, Italy (June 9–13, 2025).

His talk, “Global Assessment of Mining Activities Using TanDEM-X Digital Elevation Change Maps,” addressed how satellite-based elevation data can be used to estimate the volume of materials extracted and deposited through open-pit mining across the globe.

🛰️ The conference, organized by the International Society for Geomorphometry (ISG), brought together experts focused on digital elevation models (DEMs), terrain analysis, and earth surface modelling. As surface height data becomes more accessible, geomorphometry is at the heart of understanding our changing planet.
